Title: Stone Gaurd Help
Post by: yandiferal on January 10, 2012, 09:52:49 AM
Hello my fellow swaggers,
I hope you all had a great Christmas and new year.
Now as some of you would have seen i have had my batteries put on the draw bar which i had to remove my spare tyre and stone guard to do.
Now i need a new stone guard any idea's photo's ect ect would be great. I'm thinking of  welding in some pipe and just sliding a stone guard in and out but I'm wondering if i use shade cloth will in act like a trampoline??? and end up smashing my rear window in the middle of nowhere????
Cheers Rusty

It will act like a trampoline if you have it under tension. If you attached the shade cloth mpore loosely it will tend to dampen the rocks rather than rebound them.

If you weld something, angle it downwards and make it as big as you can.

Make sure that there is no exposed steel on the front as the rocks will bounce off the steel and back in towards your vehicle. One way to overcome the problem is to wrap the steel frame with foam tubing then the frame gets covered by the heavy duty mesh front and rear, like a sock.
Try to get the heavy duty PVC mesh that they use on the front of trucks and not just shade cloth as it wont last 10 minutes.
Regards

I made my stone guard removable, so I could access the front box easily.

Some photos here, starting on reply 111 if they are any help for you.

Timely post Rusty.  I am wanting to do a wrap around style similar to what you had and what the camprites have on my Jayco.  Does anyone know what they are made of, is it shade cloth or some other type of mesh?

I made this for my Cub. Made from 25 x 25 steel and 12 mm round uprights. The material is trampoline matting. It seems to be taking the rocks well.

Cheers Chippy :D

well swaggers i finally got my stone gaurd at a cost of $530 and i have to say i was excited and when my mate pulled in this morning with it on his ute i ran out and ................................................................................................
i almost cried after i finished cursing i was shocked at what i saw i could have made something better with off cuts from the tip, straight on the phone
WTF it was 150mm wider each side than what the A Frame is, the material was screwed on not cut evenly, shape corners so the material will tear, it was supposed to be 25X25 but was 20X20 it would snap off on the black top after 3 phone calls agreed that yep it's crap we thoght so to ??? ??? ??? ??? yes we will give you your money back just bring it down will ya (1600km away)  :P
so anyone in WA who can make a quality stone gaurd maybe out of 25mm pipe send me a message PLEASE
Thanks >:D

That sucks rusty, hope the money gets back to you. Was it a camper or van place that made it or just a random workshop?

Have a look on the front of our campers they seem to work well, no reports of broken back windows

Hope you paid by c/card. If you did leg it down to the bank and put in a "disputed transaction" claim. The new consumer laws are now standard all over Australia from 1/01/2012 so check with them too, you may not have to return the goods at your expense and they will have to either replace or refund.
Hope this helps, good luck
