Has any one got bunk beds and how are they and what brand are they easy to put together,transport etc etc etc thanks replies would be good :cheers:

We were given a set of Coleman I think brand doubled. Bloody heavy and bloody hard to set up. Good when done though.

I have an old set of bunk beds that my parents gave me (we use to use them as kids when camping) I have used them twice with my kids and now abandoned them. They are too heavy and too bulky, plus they take too long to set up. I have now opted for swags for my boys, still bulky, but lighter, and almost instant setup and pack up.

we have a set of oztrail bunks, we leave ours permanantly set up, we just take the feet part off, and then they sorta collapse down side ways, and we lay them across the bed. Hope that makes sense ???

I have a set of oztrail bunks only recently got a CT so have always pulled apart, they r a bit hard to put together sometimes require a bit of patience they go together quick just need a healthy dose of persuasion I they r great though and worth the effort I think next time I put them together I'll leave them and just take legs of

Got a set the same(oztrail), can use them as individual beds. handy to throw in the back for a couple of nights stay over at the outlaws. Yeah they are heavy and APITA. They pack up into a bag(Cricket set size), you've got to slip the framing through the stretcher bedding.
Also got a set(brand Outdoors) that folds up to two individually flat pieces that goes into a bag(1m X 1.2 x .75mm) again it"s heavy.
With this one, the stretcher bedding stays attached to the framing.
The reason we have two, when we had the trailer tent camper(with three kids) it was the same price kinda, to buy a bunk set than one individual stretcher bed. We also bought bed rolls for them.
They both have good points and bad, neither here nor there.
Now I've never slept on either of them, only used for the kids. ;D

Smart bugger........ Wish I had thought of that. Hang on, next time we go camping I am gunna look the goods when I "come up with" this great idea.......all on my own.......sweet.

Another set of Oztrail bunks here. We only use them when we are going to a spot & staying for several days. Just too much weight/ bulk for my liking for touring type trips. :cheers:

Likewise, we have the Oztrail ones, when we had the camper we'd just take the legs off, twist the metal bits so they were pointing inwards and not poking into the mattress or anything and just lay them on top of our bed!
But in saying that most of the time we had them set up as individual stretchers. It can be a bit of a pain if you suddenly decide you want them as bunks because a few joiners have to be replaced which means essentially pulling the whole thing apart.
Yes otherwise they are quite heavy when packed up in the bag.
If anyone in WA (Perth or SW) is interested we're looking at selling ours for $60, don't use them since we don't have a camper trailer. Will get around to advertising properly one day!

Exactly the same for us. Kids sleep on them. Just take off the legs and fold the connectors inwards and they sit on the main bed

we bought some rubber stoppers from clark rubber and when the bunks are layed across the bed, we put the stoppers on the ends which the feet come off just to stop any accidental rubbing on anything else.

Bought the Oz trail bunks.... I think that was the brand,35 pieces ,ridiculoussly heavy and hard to put up.They went straight back to BCF after one trip for a swap over of 2 stretchers.Maybe I,m getting old and soft but they are definitely not convenient for short stays. :cheers:

thanks guys i rekon ill leave them set up as per your thoughts great idea we only gona use them for longer trips cause the track dosent have a lot of internal room normally my son will sleep in his tent in his swag thanks for the ideas :cheers:

When we had the soft floor camper we used the stretchers with the spring steel legs like this one

Used to just remove the legs and put the rest under the Queen size mattress. Real easy set up

We have one like that, it is over thirty years old.
Fysh and her sister had a pair in their Girl Guide days.
Still use it every now and again.
I completely forgot about it. it's tucked away in the back of the cupboard.

We have 2 bunk beds which are about 30 years old and work a treat, although for overnighters would be a pain.
We leave the long supports in, roll up and place into the slide out drawer, and the ends stay together and lie flat on the roof rack.
Its the kids job to set them up, so I would have to say they are a breeze to set up and take down.
Have 3 tin lids, so the spare bed is good for the kids bags etc, up of the floor.

I just purchased a set of oztrail bunks for the kids but used one camping last weekend. it was great but you do need a small roll up foam matrace. i didnt use one because i thought the bag would be enough. it was okay but would have been great with it.

Yeah, we use a roll up mattress for the kids, I couldn't see myself using one without one.

the best ones are the 'outdoor connection' ones, i've got 2 of them. They fold up really quite well, but I still think all bunks are evil and only use them for longer stays. Otherwise just chuck the kids matresses on the floor.

Hi, like some of the others, we find they are too heavy to move about and take some time to assemble, but we only remove the legs and liike them on the trailer mattress. We dont use the top bunk for sleeping though, we put our bags etc on it to keep them off the floor.

We picked up a spinifex bunk from anaconda stand at bendigo leisurefest....they had a special for the show...... half price ($80).
We used it on that weekend away and seemed fine re set up. We will only use them if all 5 of us are travelling as floor space is at a premium in our hard floor camper.
We dismantled a little to fit on bed of trailer for fold up and fits fine.
Now only question is what to do with child number 3.... at the moment, the little man sleeps in Mum & Dads bed.

We do the same as Blackcat except we slide them under the mattress to avoid any rubbing.

here's where i got em, they got a pic there. I looked at everything on the market and these are the best (or the least worst depending on how you look at it). There's no two ways about it, double bunks are bastard things!

gurules, it would come down to how many times you want to put the bunks together, and whether or not your going to keep them in the CT or not, as we always keep our erected and and in the CT, it takes no time to get them up and bedding on, so makes no difference whether its an overnighter and extended trip.

I completely agree with Cootha, we spent heaps of time going around and looking at all the different options and the Outdoor Connection ones were by far the best. To be honest I have no experience with putting them up because our 7 and 9 year old kids do it, so can't be too tricky!!! I would say though that the packed up size would be a PITA if you were trying to carry them in a car or on a roof rack, but for the camper the size is perfect to lay on the bed. We have 5 kids and we fit 2 sets of Outdoor Connection Bunks and a single stretcher on top of our mattress perfectly.

If it's anything to go by we've got an Outdoor Connection single pole touring tent, which to us seems to have a few better features compared to OzTrail offerings so I wouldn't be surprised if the Outdoor Connection bunks was a more clever design.
I guess it also depends if you're chasing bunks as such or stretchers. The bigger the kids get the trickier it probably will be to get off and on that top bunk (particularly on their own)?

I got one of those black wolf turbo bunks.... Up in about 15 seconds and I use an oz-trail self inflater matress
It's for my son but seems really comfy

We went into the local Tentworld store where we buy most of our kit, intent on walking out with a set of bunks for Miss 2.5y.o. and eventually Mr 8 wks old..
We walked out with an OzTrail Easy Fold Low rise stretcher for the biggest one, and we'll likely get another one when the little guy gets to the same age.

Each one weights 8kg, and literally takes 10 seconds to fold out, and back up. Comes in a bag.
The bunks weighed a tonne! And took up more space when packed up with all the poles etc that they require.
If you've got the floor space, check out these quick fold stretchers. They're rated to 150kg so good for adults in an emergency. And their end legs point outwards, so the stretcher doesn't rock and move when you're on it like most of the competitors did (e.g. King Goanna stretchers).
Highly recommended.
