OK so stemming from another thread .......
What is your favourite winery or wine ?
Try not to just recommend one of the blended generic big name brands bought at ur local bottlo. Instead I'm thinking wineries with good wines, a nice cellar door, and more .......
Living on the edge of the granite belt there are plenty for me to recommend. But my current fave would have to be Tobins wines http://www.tobinwines.com.au/ (http://www.tobinwines.com.au/) at Ballandean (on the road into Sundown NP)
A small winery, with quality fruit that really shows in the tasting. They do small batches and you will pay more for it, however it is a premium wine, so Im willing to pay a litle more ....
Whats yours ????
Cheers Chippy :D

Closest one to me is at Mt Cotton. Never been there as I don't do wine, but I hear it's a good cellar door to walk through.

Hey sorry guys - didnt notice your new thread when i started mine. Ill copy my stuff over and delete it!!

Our "Local" is Morris Wines, great (the best?) Port and beautiful Durif
My other faves are Barossa Settlers and Richard Hamilton / Leconfield at McLaren Vale and Coonawarra respectively.

I hope others can post up some good entries to this post - I enjoy a winery visit whils travelling.
My favourite Winery is Chambers Rosewood Winery just out of Rutherglen. If you enjoy a good Durif, Port or Muscat (and other Reds & whites) you will love this place.
I first started visiting in the mid/late 1970's. Then it was just a corrugated iron shed with a tasting table out the side under an awning. You helped yourself - and you still do!! The tasting rooms are, however, now inside another corrugated iron addittion to the winery.
The gravel road that led to the winery has since been sealed - but the faithfull dogs still greet you on arrival, and chase you down the road when you leave. i guess the current crop of dogs are several generations removed from the first ones i saw back in 77. They love kids.
When you arrive, you get a glass and taste your way thru the 15 or 20 samples available. No taste shots poured by assistant here - you fill to your liking.
You are most likely to be greeted by the family patriach - Bill. A very affable and knowledgable vignerion. His son Steven runs the winery side of things now i think.
The final product (ok bottles) are stored nearby in large bins. When you want to buy, you go to the bin concerned and grab an armfull. No pretences here. Prices are reasonable, ranging mostly from $8 to $15 a bottle.
The Rosewood muscats and ports are to die for.
Put this one on your travelling agenda.
(disclaimer: I have no personal or business linking to this winery - just a happy customer).

Try Pig's Peak in the Hunter. :cup:
Their Big Pig red is to die for. Not cheap though.
Of course there is always Grange or Hill of Grace :cup: :cup: :cup: :cup: :cup: :cup: :cup: :cup:

Two Hands winery in the Barossa, all their wines are nice. I especially like the Bellas Garden Shiraz.
Peter Lehmann again in the Barossa do a really nice sparkling shiraz.
-
Campbells at Rutherglen is our favourite. We like a Durif and their 2006 is on the money. They also do a Merlot called "Amelie" that you serve chilled, different as it is sweet for a Merlot but very enjoyable.

not a wine buff at all, even though i used to pick grapes for Vase Felix many many years ago
it all tastes like expensive vinegar to me but if i had to have a drop it would be a Howling Wolf sparkling white
-
I've got 2 in the Hunter that I have to visit each time I go there:
Pepper Tree Wines - http://www.peppertreewines.com.au/ (http://www.peppertreewines.com.au/)
especially their Vin De Vie dessert wine
and
Calais Estate Wines - http://www.calaiswines.com.au/site/index.cfm (http://www.calaiswines.com.au/site/index.cfm)

Margans http://www.margan.com.au/ (http://www.margan.com.au/)

Their Bobbie Burns Shiraz is one of the better reds from NE Victoria. Used to buy a dozen every year, until they tried to get me to join their "special" club to get access to better deals and matured stock (6 to 10 year old vintages).
Havnt been back since, probably to my disadvantage - but didnt like that approach.

The Murrumbateman and Canberra District have some really good cool-climate wines. Well worth visiting if you are in the area.

I have to agree the Bobby Burns is a good drop, we joined their "Special" club, but only to save some $$$. We only get 2 boxes from them a year but save about 25% of their cellar door prices.

Living near the Margaret River winery area we have 134 wineries to select from ::)
The one I enjoy most and always go to last is: GRALYNS Wines, Caves Rd, Margs
http://www.gralyn.com.au/pages.asp?code=5 (http://www.gralyn.com.au/pages.asp?code=5)
Have won many GOLD awards and specialise in the sweeter taste, most local wineries do more dry wines over here.
I love the Brown Bros Cienna - a anice sweet red you drink chilled

Yeah, and they jacked their cellar door prices up when they started it! RPMO

especially their Shiraz Viognier :cup:

Hey Lost, how long ago were you at Coldstream Hills? I used to do a bit of work up there, mostly with Jamie Hewett. That is the best view in the Yarra Valley, its a shame the cellar door wasnt up there...

Yep, Jamie was there when I was there. I worked for Southcorp Wines in IT... was always up there as it was much better than the office in Blackburn, and had a company car.
I see Andrew appears to still be there too...

We were always quite partial to the Golden Grape Estate in the Hunter.
-
G/day my shed in a couple of years
put a couple of rows in to play around with & make a bit of home made vinno

Where you gonna put your cellar door sales area?
-
Not a winery or cellar door as such, but they do a great port. It's the commercial hotel (a.k.a woods point pub) Tear Arse Gully port, good value was about $17 a bottle last time I was there.
-
Saracen Estates in the Margaret River area has some of the nicest reds we've tasted in some time. Whites aren't bad either.
Else Wirra Wirra Church Block from SA.
-
Uleybury Wines Moscatino & Chapel Shiraz
Peter Lehmanns Barossa Shiraz
Sevenhill Liqueur Frontignac

Doesn't need a cellar door if MySwaggers come & help him (drink it). Won't have to worry about the cost of storage then ;D

Some great suggestions here.
I'm a fan of Margan family wines as well.
I am also a member of Keith Tulloch's fan club (well, wine club member that is! lol) and also of Peterson's of Armidale.
Whilst Peterson's send us wines from their other vineyards in the Hunter and Mudgee, it is Armidale we have been fans of for the longest, in fact, we're amongst their first membership of the wine club established there. Peterson's of Armidale do produce some very good cool climate wines, check them out if you're ever passing through. The vineyard is on the old Dangar property and so has a bit of history to it as well, the cellar door is based in the old stables, which is not just any stable I can tell you!!
Meanwhile, we like Keith Tulloch's wines and he does some of the best Hunter Semillion you'll ever get to taste. In fact, I think one year his Semillion made the world top 10. I love that every year they give us the opportunity to come down for a Master Class, which basically lets members have a tasting of Keith's varieties over several vintages. Keith also is there to give some great information on the whole process of wine making and they often put on a great lunch as well, for members, its a freebie!
-
Another fan of Chambers of Rutherglen and being an old Wang boy cant go past Gerhig's fortified wines

I sorta put Keith Tulloch's in the larger winemakers category, Still makes some nice product though.
Petersons also do some small runs for smaller vineyards that are nice. Gary Maclean does some very nice small runs in the hunter, Generally bottled under the label of the vineyard. He has a young winemaker who really knows what he is doing.
Pooles rock is another that make a consistent product at a good price, Although most of the business has now been sold off following the death of the owner.

Sorry missed the second bit, cant remember the bird cages think you could be right though (the old memory aint what she used to be) but in the early days it was one of the corrugated shed with dogs type cellar door. As far as I know they are still there havent been up there for a few years now

Not as yet, I've got a heap of port here to get through before I'll get a chance. I should declare an interest, We take part in the second part of production, We cart the grapes from the vineyard to the winemaker. Although just because we cart their wine doesn't mean we drink it, But some of it would run our trucks! ;D ;D ;D
-
Tawny (Port) from Galafrey Wines (Mount Barker WA) is a favorite of my Husbands.
Blackwood Wines (Fishbone brand wine) is a nice local place in town (Nannup WA) to go for a tasting or a nice lunch out.....I'm not particularly a wine drinker though, but it's still a nice place to go out to lunch either on our own or with the two kids as well. Best of all it's affordable enough to do it relatively regularly rather than just the special occasions.
-
The wife is a fan of Preston peaks winery in Toowoomba http://www.prestonpeak.com/ (http://www.prestonpeak.com/)
She likes them sweet and white (much like me I guess ;D ) and her fave is the wildflower white. Not all that pricey, but it just goes to show that everyones tastes are different, and price isnt necc a good indicator of quality. (in fact some of the $$$$ stuff from the big brands is rubbish! IMHO)
When we were down the hunter a few years ago we bought a fortified verdelho from pigs peaks winery, it was so good we mail ordered more a few months later ....
Cheers Chippy :D

Don't forget the other one.........Stones Mac and what are you talking about a few nips huh? ???
You have to drink the bottle, don't you or am I enjoying it to much? ;D

:o HOLY GRAPESKINS BATMAN!!! 17 - 18%! :o That's what I call a hot wine. I know there's many vinyards harvesting fruit later for flavour, but that's getting up there. Even the yeast would be struggling to ferment out at those levels.

Hope no one likes Ballandean estate ? Have just heard the whole place went up in smoke, lost 70% of there stock.
-
Our favourites are Pepper Tree from the Hunter.
And in the Granite Belt we can't go past Robert Channon, Lucas Estate, Ballandean Estate and our all time favourite has to be Pyramids Road. Warren & Sue are great people and the winery is on the road into Girraween National Park, nice and close if your looking for a drop of red to go with the camp oven roast!
 Mark

Very sad. nice people, great wines and on the road into Sundown NP. Hopefully they will rise above it all and come out fighting :D
Cheers Chippy :D

We have had a couple of cases from over WA way. Latitude 35 Degrees South Caberernet Merlot 2006 and it was really really nice, but the next lot they sent us was the 2009 and it will need cellaring for a few years yet, but they are still drinkable.
But other wines we have had or still have are....
Crabtree (any of their big reds) from the Clare Valley
Scarpantoni School Block from Mclaren Flat (still have a 2002 which will be devoured with a good steak when my step father comes to visit)
White Port from Twin Valleys Estate (we buy this by the case and spread it out to family and friends)
Bloody Good Port (that's it's actual name) from Cobbitty wines in NSW
and another one for Wirra Wirra Church Block and also had a couple of nice ones from Golden Grape estate.
We don't care where the wines come from as long as it tastes good........and we support quite a number of wineries!!! some big some small
-
I'll admit I'm not really a wine fan more a beer and spirit girl, but I can't go to Mudgee without a stop here;

Kevin Sobels wines in the Hunter is one we frequent when up that way, they also do mail order
Joadja Winery Mittagong just of the Wombeyan Caves Rd
There's heaps of wineries in the Southern Highlands, might have to arranged a MySwag Highlands Winery tour ;D

Scummy ports are only ok when you can pass them on to other members of the family when they visit and you keep the good ones for yourself hehehe

Hmmm. There may be something in that idea.
Pick a region, find a suitable camping site for several swaggers. Perhaps even see if there's a local (mini) bus company to hire a driver and bus and do a tour of several cellar doors. >:D
...but this isn't the thread to organise it. :police:
