Well just so I could annoy you all I thought I should let you all know I got a new job. I've been back on the tools, a bit of cabling & system installs for a few years now after leaving American Express in voice & data networks.
We have decided to stay in Broome now rather than head to the East coast so I thought I may a well get back into a design it build it support it type role. So I picked up a job as the Technology Manager for a corporation called KAMCS (Kimberly Aboriginal Medical Services Council) My team support the medical centres and remote out posts technically through out the Kimberly.
Anyway, whet I though would really annoy you all is that I have to visit these out posts from time to time to meet with the leaders and ensure we are supporting them and their needs. This will mean, and it's hard I know, driving the Gibb three or 4 times a year, flying to remote out post like the Mitchell falls, the Bungles etc. How bad is that Should be some great chances to see these places in the wet as well. Can't wait to get some pics

Congrats, do you get a company 4wd :)
-
Good one, but you will have to change your avatar quote now
Cheers
Frank
-
No, they have a car pool and use (I can't say it) Toyota >:D But how's this. Part of the job requirements was you had to have advanced skills in 4WDing due to the remoteness of the clinics...Ah - living the dream.......

Steve I can Carry your tools for you ;D

Welcome to the club of work paying you to travel remote!
I am Fleet and Asset Manager for a Council and sees me managing 60 plus vehicles, trailers and other assets including buildings in the many communities in northern South Australia, Southern NT and a large snippit of the WA (tri state) area.
Being responsible for the fleet, I get a cruiser at my disposal for work..... and travel all of the area regularly!
far cry from Sydney and driving buses!. Its nice to be back in the bush (Spent the better part of 10 years working remote SA/NT before thinking the big smoke would be good for me)!
Enjoy it while it lasts... even after 10 years, when it finally finished, it immediately started hurting!!!!! Hence back here now!!!!

Its nice to boast every so often :cup:

Well done Steve, but can I say, B@st@rd!!!
I got the company Ute, but only get to drive to exciting places like Roxby Downs and Whyalla, no real nice places like those you have mentioned.

Yes, tax is a good thing up here. I have been travelling the area with my other job just not as far. We get zone allowances here and also when we travel out of this zone we get a daily out of zone allowance even if it's personal. So not only did I claim my solar panels & Waeco this year as I take them with me but I also claimed the trip to Cape York for the number of days out of Zone that are not in a city.
I may need some new IT help by the way ;D

Very nice Steve - impressive job description, and sounds like it will suit your lifestyle perfectly!
Should be an interesting job to top it all off. Sounds like you can make a real difference.

It's "challenging", sometimes, in a regional location. Definitely different to being in a big metro region, anyway (both staff and services-wise) ;D.
Good luck!
Matto :)

Well if you need more staff I think there's plenty of willing volunteers here that are lining up behind me.....

I know how you feel. I was a Telstra tech based out of Derby a few years ago. late model datsun, engel fridge, chook pellets, throw net and fishing rod were all packed every Monday morning.
My mate was a helicopter pilot and we used the unused hours to go fishing. Enjoy your time up there I did.
While your on the subject of tax see it you can move to Fitsroy Xing the remote location allowance is higher ;)

Be careful what you wish for Symon 8). You could get a job here tomorrow if you really want. The job I'm leaving and in fact the whole of Broome need licences cabers at the least. As your a sparky as well you would be snapped up in - Oh I dunno, a minute..And I'm serious....

Steve, Deb's eye's lit up when Yog's made a comment about the Kimberly in 2013. We would be in, but saying that, we have a lot to deal with between now and then. We'll get to the Kimberly sometime.

I have seen that before it looks fantastic. We left Derby in 2001 with my wife 7 months pregnant. That wet season was a good one too. The year before we saw 205mm of rain in 1 hour when a tropical low passed to the north of Derby. I think it was new years eve. The water was 1 iinch from the tops of the gutter and it was flowing down my driveway like a storm water drain. The amaising thing was the next day it was hardly like it had been raining apart from a few puddles on the ground. I remember driving to Broome and the road having a foot of water over it which was continuous for about 3ks.
-
Wow, talk about the dream job. Let me know if you want an ex-nurse with IT and management qualifications who has been doing healthcare systems implementations for the last 8 years (and who would really like to be living where you are) ;D
Seriously, congratulations.
-
You've now jioned the elite Myswags who have managed to incorporate job and love (sorry dear second love ::)) and get paid for it.
I myself finished IT for the State Gov in early 2009 and haven't looked back.
I now traverse most of the rivers and creeks from the Jardine (yes I walked across it just below the Monument and it took 25 mins :o) to the Burdekin measuring how much water flows through them. The trips mostly last one week but accasionally extend to two weeks. ;D
Yep the Gov has a Boating, Camping and Fishing Group :-X(fishing after work has finished ;)).
Being exIT perhaps we could job share...? :4x4:
Good luck with it.
