Title: What tools do you use to handle the camp oven?
Post by: carinya on October 23, 2011, 07:57:28 AM
We've seen the $5 lid lifter type that comes with them, but do you have a tool or set of, that you like to use?

I use a pair of 500mm long hooks, chained together and have never had any worries so far.

The photos show them, and what they were doing last night in the yard on the way to eating a pork roast and veges.

I like that idea, could almost pull tent pegs with them too. (part of my Must have two uses or it stays home packing strategy)

Cheers Michael

I use a claw hammer just for the job. I can fit the claw through the lid and it's just right. Frostd has a couple of good ones. JK on here made one as well

I've got one of those ex army trench type shovels with the pick part at the back of the shovel. It works quite well. So far.

Welding gloves. Good for pulling baked potatoes out of coals, handling hot sticks, even welding!

I use a standard camp oven lifter, LH shovel and thick ar$ed riggers gloves. As mentioned tent pegs also make great lifters, I have also used an old wool bale hook as a lifter.

I have a tent peg welded onto a chipping hammer handle, disperses the heat and waorks well.  (Made when bored in the workshop one day).

I use fencing pliers on the lid and oven handle, not real good with baked potatoes though.

Nothing special, two tent pegs and a long handles shovel.  I am going to get some welding gloves though.

x2 for fencing pliers.  Like the ones in this pic but mine aren't as pretty.  Nothing like a tool that has multiple uses.  The hooked end for lifting the oven, and if it's unsteady for any reason, the camp oven handle fits perfectly into the closed jaws and will only come out if I let go.  Great camp tool.

Welding gloves and these , the U shaped one fits the camp oven lid so it doesn't tilt and drop coals into the oven .

Sorry Mark didn't know that when I posted.

Yep same here...... a large set of multi grips...... also welding gloves, and a long handle shovel, pretty much covers everything.

The top one pictured comes standard with an OzPig as part of it's kit.  Doubles as a lid lifter, a wood poker, and what ever else I can think of ... dual purpose and all.

Kit_e

Just DO NOT put your hot camp oven onto a plastic cutting board ... it gets rather embarrasing from there onwards ... and your partner continually brings it up every chance he gets ... now to find another purpose for a warped, melted cutting board ...

Welding glove , locking pliers and what my son calls the " fire master's stick " [ a very old wooden tent pole about 4' long with a steel spike at the business end ] used for poking the coals to where you want them ,also great for marshmellows ,,,, kids love the idea of " fire master's stick" ,seems to stop willy nilly bits and pieces being thrown onto the campfire as who has the stick is the one in control of the fire ,, lol.
