The photos of the Mazda BT-50 realease drive were shown in the SMH, this is one ugly ute...the front is just butt ugly, with a bull bar it is even worse.
Then there is the rear tailgate lights, some bloke in Mazda design has their taste buds in their arsehole...

Thanks Morgue,
The bosses at Great Wall now know where to find their missing designers....and their missing loco weed....

I agree - not all that attractive. It reminds me of the current Ssangyong's.
-
Couldn't be worse than the front end of the recent Mitsubishis. They look terrible. Reminds me of a big barra mouth.
-
Funnily enough, its exactly what I though of the new hilux's, tritons and rangers, but after a while they kind of grow on you.
First time I saw a new patrol in 97 I thought they were ridiculous.........3 patrols later..........
Yeah, its ugly but I'll probably end up liking them :-[ :-[ :-[
I also currently have a 3yr old ranger and if its anything to go by the BT will be great.

Mazda is just trying to incorporate the same image across the models. Same as Toyota.
-
funny enough i don't mind it that much, and Dazzler is right it is very similar to there other models noses
-
Have to agree with the last few comments .To me its pretty much following the fashion of all the other manufacturers,,I cant see any problems, Cripes if we all like or dislike the same things it would be a dull world.
-
I don't mind the design..the buying market will decide If it's great or not.

Mazdas Hilux Rival? Are they on crack?!
Hideous, but then I think that about all modern Recycled Pepsi bottles shaped like cars
and what is it with these farkin rims, they make the baby jesus cry

Now how boring would it be if all cars were the same?! Each to their own. If you don't like it... don't buy it! Simple!
-
I actually think it looks pretty good - I'd have one. Those front guards are akin to the CX7 - again I didn't really like that shape at first but they've grown on me.
Must admit that silver bullbar looks a bit sci-fi, but the black version looks far more real life.
-
To be honest, I don't mind it. I think the steel bar, with a little rework, looks better than the alloy. Not sure if it is up to being a competitor for the Hilux, but without driving one, or even having a close look, it is hard to tell.
I was another who really didn't like the current hilux when they first came out, now I think they are one of the best looking on the market. I guess time will tell for Mazda.
 Cracka

I have been photographing these cars since July. When I first saw pictures of them I thought the front was too jap. The side was too formed. And back was unresolved.
It took me about 3 weeks to start liking their smile. And yes I think they will take quite a few sales from Toyota. Great motor (ford 3.2 diesel)
Safety, interior, load & towing capacities. I have driven it on B & C roads as well as the deep silty sand at Sandy point fully loaded and it goes great. The alloy bullbar is very bling, but I lie the steel one and the black bar kit

Nothing the guys [and gals] at ARB or TJM can not fix.
Apparently the new BT comes with a 5 cylinder 3.2 Turbo, so maybe be OK. Time will tell.
-
they make the baby jesus cry
Is that you ralph?
-
It's the whole Mazda look thing which if one of them is butt ugly then they all must be! Just look at the Mazda 3, Only a mother could love that look. I thought it would grow on me but it hasn't. They have just downright been hit with the ugly stick. (IMHO)
-
Geez guys,
I like it. ;D
-
I reckon the jazzed up version looks great, from the front anyway..... the back end looks like a mazda 3..... and without all the good bits looks a bit weird, although talking about weird when the new triton shape came out well that was something worth talking about!!! ???

To be honest, I didn't notice the rims... I was too busy thinking the bullbar looks like a pair of spectacles that Dame Edna Everidge would wear ;D
Alchemist
-
The one with the black bulbar looks just like a smiley face car from a cartoon Rory the race car my 3 years old son watches.
-
have to say i like it.. probably more than i like the hilux facelift
-
have to say i like it.. probably more than i like the hilux facelift
I'm with you Dan..
Whoever said the Hilux,Navara etc were good looking anyway.. same old boring stuff for the last 15 yrs !!!!
The 200 series is good looking
The 76 series is a fair dinkum solid tuff 4WD.....but good looking ? never !!!!!
-
Wait till Mr Scrubby sees that bullbar - how those pointed ends are Pedestrian Safe, I'll never know!
Personally, I'm not a fan of the ally bar because it peaks up like that. However, to me the steel bar looks odd because it doesn't follow the profile of the lights. Never happy am I? I'm not a fan of the current Mazda 6's either, which follow a very similar design language.
The rest of it though, I like. The kicked up side crease reminds me of the ill-fated TRD Hiluxes. Looked good on them, looks good on this.
Like Silvo, I think it's more cohesive than the new Hilux. I expect that will grow on me too, given time.
Now how boring would it be if all cars were the same?! Each to their own.
+1000!
Thanks!
Matto :)

I'd like to buy a dual Cab next time but all the latest offerings are looking more and more like something from Lost in Space.
Maybe I'll just buy a second hand unit and spend ten grand doing it up

You've still got one option Geoff,

DEFINITELY not ultra-modern looking!
Thanks!

C'mon, it's not that bad! Most modern car manufacturers are all going down a similar "styling" path with their vehicles now.

doesnt mean its good. it means they are selling what they want to give us, not what people want, cheap and nasty as possible with largest profit..

-
doesnt mean its good
My point was that IMO most of the new vehicles seem to be going down the same path, and as others have already pointed out, they kinda look all similar anyways.
it means they are selling what they want to give us
Err, no. Just because you don't like the style, doesn't mean everyone else doesn't like it too. I've worked in automotive engineering and product design before and can tell you manufacturers spend a lot of $'s trying to work out what people like and don't like. Clearly they don't always get it right, but then again, how many people want a new car that looks like a HQ Holden?
with largest profit..
Exactly... hence why they is nothing to be gained by making a car that no-one would buy!
-
Hell and all these years they have carefully marketed to make me think that I enjoy drinking a beer...... ummmm actually no I think I buy it cause I like it and there are a lot of ones I dont buy cause they taste terrible....
from mazda: "Utility buyers demand performance from their vehicle and there’s no doubt that the All-New BT-50’s new range of advanced diesel engines will provide just that," Mazda Australia's Alastair Doak said.
"Not only will these engines make for a more refined and responsive driving experience but customers will really notice the benefit during common scenarios such as towing or driving with heavy loads."
hmmmm dont see any mention of "customers will like how this ute looks" sarcasm over, I really do think they concentrate on what they think we want, especially considering how large % of the market crew cabs take up now.... problem for those of us that like a rugged looking 4x4 as we have to compete with all the people that buy these as a second family car.....

Better part with close to 65k to get one close to looking like that.
-
I don't really like the look of them, but it's not as much of a change as when the 'new' hilux's came out. No one liked them for a while either, but they have come around!

in preperation for the chassis bending, then it will look the same from all angles
-
Sh1t hot - no way......... >:(
red fades like a basterd.......gimme one in white though and hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
I'd also replace those tyres with a decent set of BFG's, get rid of those ridiculous lights on the roof bar and those mags...... :-[ :-[ :-[
Well I'm sure they'd look good in a a macca'a car park somewhere, but seriously - NO 8)
Cheers and hoping santa brings me one.........

Looks like it was designed for Dame Edna.....on appearance!! >:D

Give me a VR ute anytime...

Looks like Mazda could be challenged for breach of copy right by Elton John, the front end of the 4x4 looks like a pair of Elton John designer sunglasses.

Ugliest car Ever = AU Falcon. the only thing that saved Ford was dropping the price and giving it away and the Taxi Industry buying them all!! THis is a close second IMHO. I'm not sure what or who Mazda surveyed to see what the public wanted/liked, but I think they went to the Drug Rehab ward ! It might have a great Volvo engine and 6sp auto and tow 3200kg, but its butt ugly. It would have to have very sharp pricing to take any real market share from Hilux or Navara.
then again, I didn't by my hilux because i only liked the look of it. I didnt NOT like the styling, I did like the rest. The alloy bar looks like it was designed by someone who was tripping, but the Black Steel bar almost makes it look normal and I wouldnt duck down and hide under the dash if I was in one with the steel bar. The only way I'd get in the one with the Alloy bar is if you re-enacted "Weekend at Bernies".
Be interesting to see how many they sell in the end. each to their own i suppose......

Yeah, I think Mazda will sell a heap if these. I'm not sure what price they'll be, but Mazda always seem to offe good value for money.

Well all that i can say is dont knock it till you have tried it
Interior SUV like comfort
Back tub is huge
Acessories list included things like duel battery systems etc so you can spec her up right from the start
And that motor hauls arse
This think makes the hilux look and feel tired beyond belief. Add to this the fact that she will tow 3.3 tonnes
I have had enough of the prado and its old hat diesel and was considering a 200 series for my next rig but after driving 1 and considering i can get a new Mazda fully kitted for even less than a second hand 200 i am now thinking hard
-
C'mon Bruce, I reckon you've made the same comment about every new model released in the last year. They don't make square 4wbies anymore, for better or worse. I don't mind the look of any of the new crop, each one has it's styling strengths and weaknesses IMO.
-
I was chatting to a good mate on saturday night who works at a large Mazda dealership, he isnt a salesman and drives a GUIV, anyway he said there selling like hotcakes.

I'd love to know where they are fitting the dual battery, it certainly won't be under the bonnet, there's about as much room under there as a D40 Nav.
They are a nice bit of gear, both the Rangers and BT's. Glad I didn't wait though for the new model, can't justify 15k more than the BT I bought new last year, just as a work rig.
-
C'mon Bruce, I reckon you've made the same comment about every new model released in the last year.
pretty much.. i cant stand the so called styling of cars and bikes these days...
-
I think the point is its differant , new, sort of stand out . If it get noticed then all it has to do is perform , if it goes it good . If it wont go then its history
-
Not a fan of the look myself, think the Ford looks MUCH better. I think Mazda Australia reckon so too, judging by the fact that every car on the BT50 ad had a steel bullbar covering up the Mazda6 front end!
Have also heard that many of the factories in Thailand (HiLux, Amarok, COurier, BT50 etc etc) got wiped out by floods. Nissan had (amazingly) shifted Navara production to Spain two months prior. Might get em to buy my next Lotto tickets...!

Isnt that wher Nissan made the Terrano? They didnt get lucky wid that!

second battery is actually sotred in a custom box in the rear tray can be quickly removed with an anderson plug arrangement it is actually not a bad idea
