Title: Drift net Beacon ???
Post by: ferret on October 14, 2011, 06:44:57 PM
While we were at McIvor River Last month we came across this item which we assumed was a Drift net Beacon.
It was 15 - 20 kg had a small solar panel inside which can be seen in the first photo & I assume the weight of the item was from a battery inside.
The item was marked Cape Hatteras & none of us had heard of this place  ??? so when I got home I googled the name & was very surprised to find Cape Hatteras is located in North Carolina on the EAST coast of U.S.A.
S@#T !!!! That's virtually the other side of the world.
Made me realize some of the crap that's washed up on the shore has possibly been dumped half a world away.
It's also disturbing to think that if we totally stopped treating our coastline & waterways like a F@%*#!G rubbish dump it probably won't make a massive difference coz a lot of this crap comes from places out of our control  >:( not that that's an excuse for leaving CRAP behind when you go camping but it's frustrating to think about.

Cheers

That's cool. I find heaps of random stuff at a local spot. It's not very well known so there's little traffic which means there's lots to find. Always bit's of ply and general boat parts. Can only assume it comes from Asian boats or something.

We pick up heaps of crap off the beach on the north shore here. Most of it is rubbish that's dumped of ships off the coast. Theres a few awesome collections of the old fashioned glass floats  washed from nets at a few houses up there. Shame they don't still make them like that. I seem to be forever picking up Chinese shampoo bottles and Shit like that...............................its a shame on those operators that dump it at sea like that to save a few dollars. Then you get the idiots like the bloke who run totally aground on the rock off NZ.........thats sad to watch your beach being covered in oil.

It will be nasty if that ship off NZ breaks up before they get the oil & fuel off

Shite yeah. The guys getting on to assess if they can get the oil off are absolute heros. Don't think I'd get on board even in fair weather.

Check the 4th photo of this link to see how bad its washing in.

Hi,
we get heaps of Japanese flotsam from fishing boats, plastic containers, net floats, bottles etc on our Southern beaches.
They must just throw it over board without thinking where it will end up.

Even the US navy used to do similar from their mega ships till one brave sailor videoed the wholesale dumping and put it up on Youtube.
