woke at 4am restless couldn't get back to sleep, got up turned light on then heard a car drive off from out front of my place.i knew it wasn't one of my neighbours cars so i looked outside to see my camper which was parked on my frontyard ready to go away on saturday had been spun around and dragged down to kerb.
i ran out the door to hear a 4wd drive off from across the road in a side street, obviously waiting to see if i was coming out,car looked like a pajero pretty dark at 4am.
got lucky this time will look into some sort of movement alarm when i get back from lake st clair on monday.
camper normally stored elsewhere under lock and key.
SCUMBAGS managed to remove polyblock lock very quietly as camper was parked almost outside my bedroom window.
one of those times i wish i was lighter on my feet because at over 6ft tall and about 130kgs i'm sure i could have taught him the error of his ways.
-
as you say, absolute SCUMBAGS with no respect for other peoples hard earned property!!
-
That was a close call, Any idea of how they removed the poly block lock?
Send me a PM if you do't want to post here for everyone to see.

You have to hate these creeps. Won't work to earn for themselves. Just easier to steal from someone having ago. Wish you had caught them.
-
g'day rich i don't know how because the lock is nowhere to be found must have taken it with them.
obviously don't want people to know how they do it.
chris i would have loved to have caught them, was definately in the mood to inflict a bit of hurt.

Lucky escape for you, i still think that if people are determined enough to want something they will. At least the lock slowed them down and gave you time to wake up and scare them off. Where my camper is stored they need to come prepared with a winch to get it out, hopefully this keeps it safe and sound.
I bet you moved it to higher ground now.

yeh trailer resecured, don't know how much sleep i'll get before we leave tomorrow.

Mixed feelings here. Annoyed they tried to take it and glad they didn't get far. I am looking for a lockable hitch pin for my tregg coupling. Would you mind letting me know what type yours is so I can get one or maybe in your case avoid it.

Wow - lucky break GQcamper! The sight of a 6ft tall, 130kg, naked guy still half asleep swearing loudly as he barrelled across his lawn in the dark with a hastily picked-up golf club must have convinced them that it wasn't a good idea to stick around!
As GG rightly says, if someone wants something bad enough then there's little you can do to completely stop them, the trick it to make it harder/noisier than your neighbour's. I like the idea of a motion alarm, but my dogs (or the neighbourhood cat who thinks he has run of the place) would probably make a game of setting it off. I've been thinking about either a wheel-clamp, or just a big hefty length of chain that can be run around the axle and through a wheel, maybe around a pole of the house/fence as well.
Not that anything could probably be done now, but have you at least reported it to the police? Even if they don't send someone out, they can keep track of what's going on around the place, what items are on someone's "hot list", etc.
I hope you have fun on the weekend, and don't spend all night worrying that someone's going to try to flog your camper while you're sleeping in it!
Again, well done on disturbing them! Shame you didn't catch up to em.
Matto :)

Good save, do you have a sensor light near the camper?
-
I have made a piece of pipe (to stop my lock getting cut) to go over the bottom of the pin and a padlock goes through the snap pin hole. It is only a deterent but that is all locks are any way.
I am not a fan of theives at the moment either, I had my laptop taken last week. so I know you pain.
Glad you stopped them.
-
g'day matto i have to agree me coming out the door just in my jocks is not a pretty sight but must have worked.
my lock wasn't a bought one just a bolt that fitted neatly through pin hole with a padlock on other end.
they managed to break lock, put legs up and spin it around all while my jack russel who normally goes off at any noise at all stayed perfectly quiet in the backyard.
these mongrels new what they were doing and probably have done it before.
no i haven't called police yet but i will now.
-
close call... wonder if one of those wheel clamps might be a better investment? when you think about it, they can all be removed with enough time and you're a big enough scumbag.
-
I guess you were lucky on two fronts; they didn't take the camper; and you didn't get your hands on them ;D
I would hate for you to be charged over manslaughter.......
A blessing that you awoke when you did
-
You were lucky indeed.
When we had two motorbikes parked in front of our house, I had them chained to the house.
Never had an issue, but that might be because we were living in a quiet village.
I hope you still will enjoy your holiday.

I was talking to a friend the other week who knows someone that knows someone else who is involved with a motorcycle gang who often gets camper trailers in exchange for drugs.
They said that camper trailers and pop tops are very easy to get and also very easy to rebirth. Caravans are a bit harder but still get them and still rebirth them.
The subject came up as mine is kept in the front yard (no other option) although our bedroom is next to the camper trailer and have a couple of dogs out the back, it is a bit of a target and I havent worked out how best to secure it.
Have asked the friend to find out what the thieves struggle with so I can go down that avenue.

What about a shock wire like they have around the paddocks?
Only 240V!

works for me... I love the idea.. but you need to make it look like an accident somehow, or you end up getting bent over by Bubba.
good to hear it didnt go.
I reckon taking the wheels off is the only way to stop them.
Find a shed to park it in, or get it into the back yard.
-
Hi gqcamper,
Glad to here you spooked the tea leaves.
My Camp trailer lives with a pair of tough high security chains and good locks wrapped around the suspension and wheels

Holy cow nothing is sacred anymore.....it's just open slather!!!
Only in last couple of weeks I have heard of two Campertrailers being stolen, one was in Avalon in Sydney & one was out here where they cut a hole in the mesh fence of the local farm machinery place and drove it off!!!! Some people have no morals whatsoever!!!!! >:(
I would be devastated if someone stole ours (even though it's insured) it would be the iccky feeling that someone had been lurking, watching and planning to flog your stuff.... creepy buggars!!!
Just wished you had have got hold of them.....now that would have woken the neighbourhood up :police: not to mention that Jack Russell (they are usually very good guard dogs).
-
Find 'em and cut off a hand....
Worked well when I lived in the Middle East!
Some aspects of Sharia law are great, most are not!

Howdy gqcamper, Although you must be still hot under the collar it was really a good ending for you.
I would say they used bolt cutters on your padlock as not many padlocks are a problem for good bolt cutters.
I made a lock pin with a padlock for my camper with a cover over the padlock to keep bolt cutters at bay.
It would take a lot of hammering or an angle grinder to get it off I would reckon.
I wouldn't like to lose the key to it when camped out bush.

Yikes! I can see why!
Great idea.
Thanks!

the biggest pain in the rear is going to be undoing all the locks that i will probably attach now, already went out and bought a KLAMP IT wheel clamp $200 i didn't need to spend right now.
i do like the piece of box section to go over the pin and lock.

at one time few yrs ago numerous Patrols were going missing at Medowie near Newcastle, with many being members of Outers... there was Shit loads of suspicion going around at the time about some sort of link between it. Can you think of anywhere easier to find out where and whose home when and what cars have what accessories? apart from 4wd shows? it only takes a part photo of your car at home for scrotes local to there to make the link.
This to me is why threads like "RING THE BELL TO TELL ALL THIEVES NOBODIES HOME" are plain dumb.
It may do nothing to blank out # plates but it maybe worth it, I do it as courtesy on our club website.. I've met numerous people off here in recent times that dont even tell anybody when they are going on a trip, even for a weekend...
-
g'day lost i think this time it was just an opportunist because the trailer had only been here for a couple of days getting ready to go away.
normally it lives elsewhere under lock and key,we only bring it over when going away.
-
I reckon if you sat outside tonight in the shadows, you'd see them cruise past again....

Based on previous experience this is likely as they have now removed your lock and they would be thinking that its now unsecured and ready to go. Definately get another lock on that camper asap.
When my car was almost stolen they broke the window and tried to start but found a kill switch before i woke up and chased em.
Next night they tried again but i had installed an alarm so they did not get it again...pricks....
Anyway LOCK HER UP and sit in the shaddows for a night- baseball bat in hand......
-
Bit off topic but along the same lines.
If you ever have your car broken into and your battery stolen, sometime in the next week it will happen again as they know you now have a brand new battery.

seriously? some people must be truly desperate. ???
-
I would be sleeping underneath my camper with a nailgun tonight and nailing a few feet to the floor if I was you >:D
Seriously though, you must have done something good to someone because that is some good Karma that just came your way
-
your dam lucky they didn't just take you on and them steal your CT, good result for you. cancan if you do find out any thing from your friends of friends of friends on what is hard for them let some of us know.
troy
it always pay to have things insured, as much as it hurts to fork out the premium, it hurts less than loosing your stuff.
-
I agree burnsy someone was looking after me.
Troy the camper is fully insured just would have been a pain digging through the shed to get the tent and the bits and pieces to go with it to head away tomorrow.
-
Just a tip for added security
;D
-
That sux... I never really thought about security, mine is sitting there ready to go, though I am a rear access lot, so a bit harder, might have to clean the shed out and lock it away !!
-
I like this one personally...
-
wish i caught the f^(*&ing (^%^(*cks that took our camper ................
anyway glad u were able to hear and scare them off .
craig
-
G'day craigtempo i believe it's been pretty common up your way for the last couple of years, also a pretty hot market for GQ patrols around there too.
-
maybe I should put a kill switch on my troll, cause she'd be really hard to replace being a duelcab

What was the response from the local law enforcers? Is it a common treand occuring in your area?
