Shovels. 1 by the back door for this reason, 1 in the trailer at the front door and 2 or 3 in the shed.

Swmbo did. ;D ;D ;D ;D

That is one fat snake!!
Well fed on field mice i'd say.
-
I got the first tiger for the new season yesterday, 4Ft and also in very good nick just a little to slow >:D
He was sunning himself right were I'd been on my knees doing some fencing earlier this week, we also have a few shovels around the house and sheds.
-
Any guess on the species?
-
This bloke was about 5 foot and definately a brown, With his fat guts he was also fairly slow. ;D ;D
-
We get the odd brown snake one or two each year the bloke next door was telling me he uses yabbie pots then the shovel personally I preferred the shotgun when they came around on the farm pitty we are in suburbia theses days if it was a little smaller I'd give the yabbie pot a go but best to leave those big buggers to bugger off
-
Yep, an Eastern Brown Snake.

I too think it will be a season to really watch where you put your boot. Last w/end I saw as big a black snake as I've seen for a long time, very well fed he was too. I haven't seen one yet that a good charge of No4's wouldn't stop.

Yep guna be a long season me thinks. I came across a brown last week that spanned the track I was driving, probably 8 feet at a guess. I've also spotted a couple of blacks cruising around.
-
Did they have there hats on backwards ???

Did they have there hats on backwards ???
Yep with boom boxes on their shoulders, Ghetto style. ;D 8) ;D 8)

Depending on what they are and where they are, depends on what happens to them (hypothetically as they are protected >:D). If it is poisoness and near the house = GONE (bang bang), if it is harmless, then it stays. Down the paddock or in the orchard, then blacks, black face whips, etc can stay, but taipans, browns, adders and roughs are dispatched. We have several large (3-4.5m) carpets living in the sheds and they have been there for years keeping the mice population in check. The 4.5m one has a habit of cruising through the packing shed during harvest season. She can certainly empty a shed full of backpackers quickly. Damm funny as she just slithers on through and out the back door without a care in the world.
We are trialling solar powered snake repellants around the house this year. So far so good as there has been a few active elsewhere but I have yet to see one near the home. If they work well, I might take one or two away with the camper.

Without starting a word war why are we killing snakes. I hate em. Scare the pants off me.
BUT
No one has died from a snake bite in oz since they worked out wrapping the limb with a bandage. (anyways, thats what our snake ranger fella says and so did snakeman, or the snake bloke, or whatever his name was at agfest said) Happy to be proved wrong.
One of our workers was bitten by a Tiger snake the other day, we have real big tigers down here, and was unwell for two days.
We get tigers coming across our paddock down to the neighbours. Border Collie does not like them and goes a bit strange when they are around.
cheers
-
we get heaps of em on the farm , where we have problem areas like the dairy we lay down fruit tree mesh as we have two young kids ,snakes crawl over it and try to go through it and get stuck we caught 7 yes 7 brown snakes last summer but never a redbelly and we have heaps of them aswell you learn to keep a lookout , now is the time they are active
-
The only time I would kill a snake is if it was close to the house, otherwise just leave them alone.

The only time i would kill a snake is when i'm quick enough... I'll leave the harmless but as far as i'm concerned, the others are fair game to me, especially now i have kids.
You're better than me Singo, there's no time for pics with me, it's more "quick get a shovel before the *#@# gets away!"
Listo

I don't kill every snake that crosses my path, But if a brown enters my yard where my kids play, Its chances of survival aren't good. Blacks I'll generally run off, Browns will strike for fun. We are lucky the dog is a quick little bugger or she would have been hit.
The photo was about 10 feet from my back door, right where my kids play.

Just as a side note all native reptiles are protected species and as such NPWS can prosocute and fine for deliberatly harming them so I would be carful what is declared on open forums. From memory the fines are up to 20K :police:

Your humble worship sir...I know it's in the books as being up to a 20k fine, & I know you'd really only give me a slap on the wrist & a lot of words about the environment that you & I both know you just say to go through the motions...but I didn't really mean what I wrote over on that there MySwag site, that was only words to go along with the theme of the topic.
Them desk jockey warriors from NP were just bored & wasting tax payers money by surfing the Net, instead of out planting themselves in the Bush as fertiliser, & didn't even see me killing any snakes.
What's that?
I'm free to go with NO penalty?
Thanks mate...see ya!
What's that? Nice snake skin belt I'm wearing?
Yeah, imported from OS because it's much cheaper!!!
Somehow, I don't think any authority would bother ;)

There was a saying about if you had black snakes you didnt have some other type. Wonder what the other type was?
Or is that red back spiders and daddy long legs.....

The saying is that if you have black snakes around you'll have no browns. One of my mates is the local snake handler nd he reckons it's bs.

Yep, it is BS.

I think the way they (snake handlers) word it is: "No one who was carrying one of these snake bite bandages (available for sale after the show for $20) has ever died of a snake bite". Statistics = numbers looking for an argument. Approximately 3.2 people die each year from snake bite - .410 shotgun is my weapon of choice, but a shovel or plain wire also work well.
-
I think the only truth to the browns and blacks is that a black snake will eat a juvinile brown and visa versa. I use to work in Grafton on a farm and have seen blacks and browns within a few days of each other on the same farm (only a 100acres or so).
Whilst I understand they are protected, So are my kids.
My kids are worth more than $20k.
I think that there is also something about being able to kill them if you are protecting yourself from immediate threat/danger. I just wanted to point it out as many people don't know that it is illegal, that and shooting kangaroos without proper permits, and could get them selves into trouble if none the wiser.
Cheers
James

Yeap BS. The reason you don't often see them together is because they eat different things and so generally hunt in different areas. Browns eat warm blooded animals - rats, mices, birds, etc and blacks eats cold blooded animals - frogs, lizards, politicians, lawyers, etc

Sorry............Disagree........
They wouldn't eat any of the lawyers or politicians I know.......They're all too full of SH!T. Even snakes have standards ;D

friend of my sons birthday on weekend, we went over there for the party, and on the fence where I was sitting, the bloke told me that in the bush behind me was where the tiger snake lived... As my poo doors opened like rockets to move me forward he showed me photos on the phone of this snake, and 2 more in his yard in recent weeks, and after a quick google, it could very well have been one.
-
Just googled snakebite death statistics in Australia. 58 deaths in 21 years from '79 to '00. See http://www.nchirt.qut.edu.au/consultancy/amdig/workshops/documents/2003WinkelSlides.pdf (http://www.nchirt.qut.edu.au/consultancy/amdig/workshops/documents/2003WinkelSlides.pdf).
As a forty something male living in Qld who frequents rural areas, I'm in a high risk group.nNo deaths in women between 24 and 55 years old, consistent with my own observations that swmbo will be running for the hills at the mere mention of the s word.
Too scared to google motor vehicle mortality rates. Just been reading The daily rant thread.Pity there isn't an antivenom for some of the fools driving on the roads.

Daz, your handler may have been confusing Tassi with the rest of Aust. From my three years in Queenstown I am pretty sure all snakes in Tassi can be treated with the one anti venom which makes it a quick process when you reach the hospital. No such luck for snakebite victims on the mainland. I am with the others, tigers and their other poisonous mates around my house will be turned into two or three snakes so long as I have small children about. Saw a real nice southern carpet python last week down south at Contos, got out for a few photos, he wasn't fazed and slithered off about five minutes later. Ten minutes later we disturbed a tiger on the walk track to the beach.

In Gundigai where we had a holiday house we used to get both Blacks and Browns. When the browns came out the blacks would hammer them, they hate them to death and did...Blacks are easy to herd away but as said the browns like to hit out just for fun.. If I have a black around I'll teach the kids to be careful, hopefully they keep the browns at bay.
Not sure what we get over here though. Have only seen a small python..
-
And just to prove i'm not a bogan yobbo animal killer I relocated this bloke out of my yard before the dog got to it.

Cheers for the info. Makes sense. You watch I'll get bit this year :)
-
those first couple of pics looked more like an Olive Python. Can have an attitude but in reality just want to go about their own business. The problem with killing "dangerous" snakes is that most people wouldnt know what snake it is if they fell over it.
3000 reported bites, 300 people needing treatment, 3.2 deaths. Yet the average snake gets killed in the 1000's because people dont know the reptiles and dont know their temperament. Snakes generally clear out from humans as we are way too dangerous.
and 20.00 for a snake bite kit???? you cant be serious, tell them they are dreaming and you can get one for about 10.00 easily. 15 if you want a extra roller for legs.
-
Don't reckon it's an olive - it's head is too small to be a python.
-
There is no doubt in my mind it is/was a brown. As a reward for helping the blue tongue yesterday I've come across 2 browns today, the first I didn't see and hit with the mowern The second is hiding in the bushes.
-
the problem is that an Olive doesnt look too much different to a brown.

thanks for that:)
Showed the pic to my Wife (the real snake person, she converted me from a shovel person) she thinks that it is possible that it could be a brown, only problem is that the pic is a little blurry, can you go and take another pic a little closer this time;)

that ain't no olive its a brown

second that.
-
I just hate them all, give them all a wide birth, generally dont have to much trouble with them around here though. touch wood.
-
second that.
x3, err on the side of a brown
Its got a small head, not distinctive triangle head nor triangle hex bandings.
-
It also has an orange belly, which also points to it being a brown.

Well not sure about not having any around but it certainly can't hurt...

Perfect alarm system :)
Reptile show I once seen...handler mentioned that all poisoness snakes have 3 tiny dots on the top of their head
But are you going to get close enough to look (http://www.clicksmilies.com/s1106/lachen/laughing-smiley-011.gif)
-
true problem is she spends so much energy keeping the door open she never has the energy to bite anyone when they come near:)
The other day she decided to climb from the shelves over the airconditioner and along the fluros, problem with being 12 foot is it takes time to stretch out properly.
mind you this is the same snake that stuck its head in the toaster to see where the bread went.
-
I was having dinner with some mates on Monday night and the topic of snakes came up. One recounted a story that went along the lines of a girl rang a radio station that had a vet or reptile handler for a guest and this girl who had the pet snake woke up with it in bed with her 2 nights in a row and the snake was dead straight next to her. The advise she was given was get rid of the snake, it was apparently sizing her up :o :o :o.
Don't know if it is a true story but I thought it was a good one.
-
Looks like a Python to me, heads too big to be a brown snake and a bit too long as well, very rare for them to be over 2mtrs (6 foot) so that one in the door at 4mtrs (12foot) can't be a brown snake.
Baz.
-
I'd have a schooner to say that the snake in the first 2 pics of the thread is an Eastern Brown and looks to be about 5' long. Am getting pretty thirsty so happy to be proved wrong.

Any excuse :cup:

Agree as well.
A shed skin will be longer than the snake it came off but I would bet that the brown that one is off would be at least 6 foot
Cheers
James
-
looks like I owe you a schooner when we next meet, I was sure it could have been a olive, missus didnt agree, but just in case I wouldnt be handling a wild snake, took me 6 months to get to a stage I would handle her comfortably although I still get nervous. Brown or Olive they still have a right to life and they are still an important part of the nature of life, they remove rats and rabbits, what more could you ask:)

A WOMAN has died in hospital after she was bitten by a snake at a private property near Stanthorpe, south-west of Brisbane, late yesterday.

what was that about no one has died since starting to wrap with a bandage
We relocated 3 browns and a redbelly black from under the house this week gives me the heebie jeebies with two young kids
