Title: DP Chip, steinbower, etc with standard exhaust?

Hi all.  I have posted something similar on the Prado forum, so if you see it there too don't shoot me!

Just wondering if anyone has put in a chip without upgrading the exhaust?  I would love to do the exhaust too but there are a few constraints, SWMBO, money etc, and I want to be able to take out anything I have put in the car when we sell it anyways, exhaust might be a bit noticeable if missing!

Opinions on DP Chip are welcome, as this is the one I'm looking at.

Any pics would also be well regarded.

IMWO with mods like this, if your going to do it, do it once and do it right to get the best out of it.

Trust me i'd love the exhaust too, but step by step.  If I could put on everything I wanted in 1 go I would.  I got approval for the DP Chip so i'll take the small wins where I can get them.

Where does the EGT go?  Is there any sense putting one on the standard exhaust to only upgrade the exhaust later and have to buy another EGT?  Or would I just get another sensor?

You have a small lug welded on exhaust and it goes in there.
then when you get new exhaust, then you just ask them to weld another fitting to it, screw it in and go.

when i bought the patrol, it had the safari chip in it, with the standard exhaust. It is possible to run without the exhaust upgrade and you will notice improvements. However, as they say, to get the most out of them, it is suggested to do the exhaust. I have done my exhaust since and have noticed an increase further to just the chip.

I'd get a free-flow exhaust before I got a chip; you'll get more bang for your buck.

I took the Steinbauer off mine and it wasn't much slower at all. Now I have a full 3" system with high flow cat in the garage waiting to go onto the ZD30, the chip can go back on then.

Hi all

I was wrong. There, I said it. Wrong diddley, wrong wrong wrong wrong.

As some would know I have been most vocal on the 'dont fit a chip" discussions in the past.

I was at the 4wd shop the other day handing over another wad of the folding stuff (well buying stuff for the work trucks) and the sales manager makes me an offer on the last of his dtronics that he had in stock for a prado 120 with the 1KZ.

We argued politely for a while and he made me an offer. Cost price and if I dont like it bring it back.

So I figured I will keep it for a month and then bring it back.

Anyway here are the results.

(Before fitting I put an exhaust gas temp probe in the exhaust beneath the dump pipe. Not an ideal spot and it will be relocated when I get time. i was after a baseline temp)

Filled the prado up and did a full throttle run to 100kph up a steep hill out of Hobart (Southern Outlet sth of Kingston on the way to the Huon). Fitted the dtronic (passenger kick panel - easy fit just plug and play) and did another run up the hill.

It was a full 4 seconds faster than standard. Off idle response is much much faster and hills are easier to tackle. Whats more the annoying flat spot that developed when I fitted the larger tyres (kind of like it was dropping into OD too early) was gone. So it is definitely pulling better.

I did a fuel economy test over the two tanks of fuel and filled up after 1308km. Previous fuel economy was 13.6lph. New fuel economy was 12.8lph.

Better by .8 per litre.

And there has been no difference in Exhaust Gas temp (though I havent towed with it yet).

And there is no additional black smoke out the back.!

So a middle aged diesel mechanic can learn new tricks



Economy over 15k is the same since fitting.  Ideally you would go with the exhaust first but on the 1kztd there is a real noticeable difference with the std exhaust.  I am now saving for a new exhaust.

I fitted and ran a DP chip on my Patrol with standard exhaust system for about 8 years without any problems.  I have just recently fitted a larger free flowing exhaust which improved the rev range where the turbo spools up, but not much else.

If you can only afford the chip then do it.  The power increase from these things are great (even with standard exhausts).

Not everyone can run out and fit all the bits and pieces all in one sitting.  Buy them as you can afford them.  You might fit the chip and be happy with the results and don't need the exhaust upgrade.

As you would know, towing with the 3L is a pain in the butt when trying to overtake someone in an overtaking lane as they are usually on an uphill.  I was doing a fishing trip to Proserpine with a 100 series cruiser and just couldn't keep up it was embarrassing.  I couldn't overtake granny in the little holden barina even with my foot almost flat to the floor, just gave up trying to get anywhere quick and just drove it like I should.  That was towing a camper.  I spose this is what I will assess the chip against.  Im not expecting to fly past anyone but I should be at least able to overtake someone, even Margaret in the Barina...

Find someone local to you off the boards, and see if you can borrow theirs first.
I'd also consider the exhaust first..

My father fitted a dp chip to his 100 series with no other mods. It was set fairly conservatively looking more for economy towing than anything. It was fitted for 3 years and about 100,000klm with no problems before he upgraded the car.

They are $1,495 for my diesel (supply only) ;D

Is an expensive way of getting a bit more torque from a diesel engine

I've been very happy with the chip and the power which it produced.  I couldn't believe the difference when I first took it for a drive when fitted.  It was very hard to drive conservatively.  From memory they were quoting 25-30% increases, and I have no doubt mine was at the higher end of the scale.

Berrima Diesel were brilliant when it was fitted.  There was no checking the power increase on workshop rollers, I was taken for a drive before and after the job up a selection of the local Berrima Roads which had slight inclines to highlight the increases.

I haven't stopped recommending them since the job was done.

I would hold off until you see a second hand chip on the market.  The dtronics seem to go for $500 - $600 second hand and are pulled out when selling the car.

Use the savings for the exhaust.

Just on a side note, what brand exhausts did people go with.  I heard the recommended size for the Prado was 2.5 - 2 3/4 so there is no loss.  some websites recommend 3".

I have recently been put onto ENG-TEK and Beaudesert exhausts... any experience with these?

Mine is from Scott's Rods Exhaust, but of course is on a Patrol.  IMO the Scott's exhaust may not be as neatly finished off as the big name ones such as Beaudesert, but the price is very pleasing.

Another DP chip user here and as yet have not changed the exhaust although intend to one day....  The chip has made a pretty big difference to most driving conditions.  I use different settings for highway versus offroad versus towing.  I also have an Pyro gauge and on some settings I can see a huge difference in EGTs with different settings.

I have a dp chip and 3.25 inch stainless beaudesert exhaust in my v8 cruiser ute, have dyno  charts with power increase of nearly 50 hp. There was also a k&n filter fitted and safari snorkel end. I haven't saved any diesel but my rear tyres tell me I have way to much fun!!

I run a beaudesert on mine and its made a huge difference, and can only be better with a chip. From what I have read the general consensus is that exhaust has a bigger impact than a chip has on these engines when done by themselves. I'm sure in some engines it might be the opposite depending on how well the oem exhaust is designed, but I can tell you the standard toyota Zorsts are rubbish, especially the dump pipes.
I'm planning on also fitting a chip down the road but for now I'm quiet happy :cheers:
