Have been camping at Yarrie Lake and its on the edge of the Pilliga Forest which means a lot of Cypress Pine available for firewood. I know it not as good for camp oven cooking but I can't think of a timber that smells better in a campfire. Can anybody think of something with a better aroma?
-
Any camp fire smells good.... ;D but do like camphalaurel...(Spelling?)

Gday Glenn
I see Duchess has been taking good care of you ;D ;D. Yarrie Lake is a nice spot, Tam took us out there for a look last time we were there.
Pines do have smell of their own. I like good old eucalypts, smells like the bush to me. Must admit, when I saw the title I had a vision of the scene from "Blazing Saddles" ;D ;D

Huon Pine, no wait hold on,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ;D

Cypress smells great in the fire, and casurina smells terrible
-
I love the smell of napalm in the morning

The whole tent takes on the aroma of the camp fire. The next time you open the tent the memories of past trips come flooding back.
Eucalypt for me, mind you, cypress is nice. Camel not so much, but it keeps the bugs down ;D
Smell is such a strong memory trigger, and when that memory is a past trip/s , what could be better?

What about swag aromas. Especially after drinking and curry.

Nothing beats the smell of cypress....and I think it is purely memories of visiting my grandparents in Coonamble that triggers whenever I smell cypress.

There is nothing better than the smell of Kola steaks on a BBQ, they also taste better when cooked on a eucalypts wood fire. 8)

Peppered roast beef slowly cooking in the camp oven. :cup:

Gidgee. Best coals in the known world. This leads to great camp oven meals, and the best toast . When there is moisture in the air you get that musty smell of the flowers that people from that part of the bush just love. To anyone not from gidgee country it smells like wet dog, or kangaroo crap so I'm told.
-
It may not be the best smell if you are camping with a fire going , but for me the way bestest smell is that of the first rain for a while on a dry, dusty paddock/road.
-
That sounds great where is Yarrie Lake?
We had a BBQ today after smelling the snags on offer at the local Bunnings...yummm

Hi,
the smell of dry gum leaves when first lit on the fire.
Once while having been overseas for just over 2 years with out a gum tree in sight, we were exploring small roads and tracks in the Cameron Highlands (Malaysia) and came across an old colonial mansion in a state of major disrepair.
In the front yard (well almost jungle again) was a huge Blue Gum, and we could smell the damp leaves on the ground.
We didn't have matches, so dipped a gum leaf and twig into the petrol tank of the motor bike and put the leaf between a spark plug lead and the engine and kicked the motor over.
Yea! Instant flames.
A pile of gum leaves and twigs made a small fire and the smell of the smoke brought tears to our eyes we were so home sick.
We even use gum leaves at home to start the fire; keeping a box of leaves warm and dry in the sun room for the evening blaze, I just love that first smoky smell.
cheers

Yarrie Lake is between Wee Waa and Narrabri a few k's from the Australia Telescope. Don't tell anyone else or it will start to get really crowded :D

Camping at riverwood downs a mate brought a bunch cutoffs of western red cedar from renovations he had been doing, that stuff smells fantastic. Could be an expensive habit though
