“This isn't a production-ready concept but the beginning of a four-year journey to design a relevant Defender for the 21st century."
All new cars and their shapes and lack of styles, what drugs are these designers on? Someone help me!!!!!!

It looks like a Vitara mated a Defender who's mum was a FJ Cruiser.
Incestuous.
Unless it comes out with a 300rwkw+ donk, it's gay as Thorpy.

Front (windscreen forward) reminds me of the ponderous nose-heavy look of the first Freelander, only uglier. FJ40 turret, and generic bodylines that could be anything from VW to Kia. And the people paid to come up with this are paid how much???
I am actually surprised to read that they only sell 20,000 per year, because I see Defenders everywhere... perhaps it's because 99% of the Defenders sold over the last x number of years are still going strong? It is pretty obvious that the people who choose Defenders choose them for very definite reasons, and as previously said they already have most other segments of the recreational vehicle market pretty well covered with the rest of the range.
I really can't understand why they would choose to mess with such a classic vehicle....
Why don't they just call it iDefender2.0

I reckon cut half the front bar off, add a tube bar with winch, nice wheels/mud tyres and the right colour would look nice!!
-
I like the look of it... but that thing has no right to call itself a defender.
I don't have a problem with IFS/IRS but not on a 'fender'.
This is just sales and marketing bullsh1t. They just killed an icon. RIP defender (well in 2015 anyway).

The only experience I have had with any Defender is with the green lumps you stick in the garden to kill snails.
This new Defender looks like it will do the same job, and looks marginally better.
The old Defender cost about $8 a box, if these new ones are similarly priced, I think they'll sell heaps, regardless of the criticism shown so far.
-
Hahahaha, the same subject is going on in AULRO, with almost word for word replies on this horrible looking butt ugly car :cup:
What are they on to think this is even close to what the diehard Landy people want, have they even looked at the sales for the Defender 90, obviously not.
Baz.

I now believe the one night stand the FJ Cruiser had was with a Mini.

Hopefully by the time it comes into production, it will look a bit more like the old Defender and with 5 doors, not 3, all concept car never really go into production thankfully.

You saw the photos of the new Patrol!!!!!
-
Looking at it as a design concept,,, unless there is a lot more of the current defender "look" and a heap of the mechanics retained,,, i don,t think i,ll be trading my current 20 yr old defender in a hurry, as IT is the iconic version ;D,,this appears more ironic,, or is that moronic? >:D

it really is madi gras at Landrover aint it!

Actually that looks like the stuff I used to doodle at school when I was thinking about futuristic 4wds... in the late seventies my dad's job was driving around the Snowy Mtns in a Landcruiser ute (or a tracked oversnow vehicle in winter) as a linesman and cutting down trees under powerlines with chainsaws, and I'd dream up vehicles that would make his job easier :)
It is not any sort of replacement for the Defender, but if they sold that as a Freelander it would do well!
-
All this was started by a bloke in a Patrol calling another rig ugly ,,,,, there an`t no accounting for taste >:D ;D
-
It's a concept car people. Sheesh. Every time a new model is previewed or a concept car gets put out, there is a deafening chorus of old farts whinging about how it looks different, and couldn't as good as "the old dunger I've had for 20 years". "You couldn't take through the bush, it's too flash"
Here's your perfect vehicle, big wheels. lots of clearance, no technology. I doubt you would notice too much if it got scratched.
Can I tell you, when the 80 series was first released, folks didn't rush out and bang them up the hardest tracks either, BECAUSE IT WAS NEW AND EXPENSIVE. Like every new car before it.
They don't make boxes anymore, except for Tokyo traffic.
And whilst I am ranting about all you whingers, someone else will be putting up a thread about how it is disgraceful that for $sh1tloads the Toyota 70 series isn't more modern, and how could Toyota not update it more in the past 20 years.
I reckon that the open top unit looks alright. It's highly unlikely that it would go into production like that as it lacks the requirements of risk adverse manufacturers ad governments.
-
if it has not got sliding windows ,its not a landy
if it hasnt got an oil leak, its not a landy

If you can get it in Blue with MT's not those HT's that are on it, with a Duramax and 8sp Alison Auto I'll take one.

I have owned two Defenders and been driving them for over 10 years. If the pics and reports are true, we may have seen the last of a past era in auto-manufacturing for the mass scale market.
Leather interior will not suit those that 'hose' out there 4wd's, 20" rims won't go to well driving to the wood pile... I cannot imagine me being able to throw a few bales of hay into the cargo area, doing a quick mod while i am in a remote area or being able to pull the dash apart in 5 mins in one of these. I am certain that it has its place, but if it is as in the link, it is NOT a replacement for the current car, rather a completely new model.
While I respect that things change, improvements are made and peoples needs change, some things are constant and the Defender as a utility vehicle that has a very tangible purpose that is does with ease will be lost.
Now, where was that late model TD5 Defender with only 36K on the clock for sale again....
-
I reckon any new defender should retain live axles front and rear (only because theres not many cars left on the market with it). The concept looks to much like a freelander, and it looks like it would blend too much in to the disco market which to me defies the purpose of what the defender is

What happens when some clown dose buy a NEW rig . We all want to see how it goes , sit in it , smell the adventure in the air . Everybody wants to see but wont comit to really having 1 for themselves Sad 8)
