Just read where Toyota are bringing out a base model 200 series, complete with vinyl floor coverings, barn doors, 5 seats, but still retaining the twin turbo V8 diesel. It is rumoured to be priced about $10,000 to $15,000 cheaper than the GXL, and available for order in September with first delivery about November 2011.
Anyone got any more info on this?

Yeah I have a pic somewhere, I heard they're dropping the 78 Wagon for this.
-
The 78 was/is a lot of coin for a fairly agricultural, if competant, vehicle.

Pretty heavily disguised that one.

I also read the Cruisers are still auto only also

if it's true it would be great. i remember as a kid that you were once able to by a taxi pack vehicle with vinyl floors and seats, and considering people like to drive 4wd drives out in the bush through mud sand water and so on it's got to be better having a vinyl floor and a lot easier to clean. If you think about it even seats would be ok as most people put seat covers on. It would be about time car company's started to make vehicles a lot cheaper for all of us of all budgets.
Just my 2 cents worth.

I wouldn't suggest that the photo of the 200 is necessarily what we'll get here Toyota make a bunch of variants, and that wheel carrier is common in Africa and the Middle East, but we never get them. It's probably just a test mule.
The barn doors might make it, though I can't imagine how they're a particular advantage or cheaper than split fold.
On the Patrol, new models often polarise at first, but once you've looked at it for a while it grows on you.

Even the "live axle only" brigade have come around to agree that, except for downhill retardation, auto is superior in every other 4wding situation.

I have found my 200 (obviously auto) has better downhill retardation than my manual 3.0TD Patrol ever did - I put that down to the lower transfer case ratio and strong retardation from a V8. Plus the 200 has Hill Descent Control which not only works a treat, but further improves downhill retardation. But I agree that autos in other vehicles can be below par compared to a manual.
Cheers

They will still have camry front ends in them though so they will never be strong performers off rd.

I have no critisim of autos it was just an observation

That is the sad future of all 4wds...
with such a small %age of them ever going offroad, they need to supply their markets with what "people" want.
-
is it just me or does that patrol look like a pajero?
i kind of like it.

Must be just you, I think it looks like a mazda.

I kind of like it too except for the bulbous tail lights. What's with them? The 200 has them as well and they look sh#t!
Don't get me wrong, I'd have a 200 series every day of the week if funds allowed. Just hate the tail lights on them.
Cheers, Sam.

A couple of more pics
I spoke to the dealer Friday and production starts next month, with barn doors, key start, dual tanks, traction type control started with V I think, steel wheels, auto only but he said there could be a wait from the mine orders.
The one below has a tape deck?

Now that's more like it!

I just went through the process of updating the patrol (again) and I settled on a new road car which arrived a couple weeks back.
Can't beat an old 4wd for strenuous outback touring
I'm very pleased with my decision. Sorry Mr Policeman ;D

How does a photo of an African model relate to Australia? Tape deck?
-
I REALLY wish that they would upgrade the petrol engine to the yankee 5.7ltr. One day maybe?

Being a mine spec vehicle with a tape deck it will mainly be used in WA where they don't have CD's yet
