We are looking to go camping in a couple of weeks. It will be two families each with several young children.
My BIL has got his sights set on Danjera Dam (for the fishing opportunities I thinks!) but after reading a few reviews on the camp area there and the amount of trail bikes and 4wd I am a little worried that it may not appear to be the best location for a relaxing family weekend.
So, for the swaggers that know the area can you please give me a heads up to the condidtion of the campground, traffic that can be expected and is there much there for the children to do or explore?

You could head out to Lake Lyall just past Lithgow or Lake Windemere up the Mudgee rd.

Have not been to Yalwal for a few years now but if it is still the same it is a great place for 4wd'ing but not a lot for the kids to do. If you dont have alot of 4wd experience and a well modifide 4wd there are alot of side tracks you wont make it down either. If you are after a nice spot, although I dont know about the fishing I would be heading to Bendethra, nice big open spaces for the kids to play and ride bikes ect. and there may be some fish in the river.
hope that helps and im sure someone on here will know of other places

The dam is a great place for the kids and adults, BUT, if you want a relaxing weekend, probably not the place to go, it can get pretty busy with trail bikes, not so much 4WDs as they tend to go down to Wattle flat over at Mintbush trail.
Charlyong crossing is a bit further down the Braidwood Rd, ABOUT 9K past Nerriga, you turn right at Corang Post Office Rd about a K down the road as you cross the creek you turn into the area where you camp, not a bad spot, no facilities though, but nice and clean and not too crowded.

Hi Lori,
I was going to suggest Coolendel as Danjera/Yalwal is a popular 4WD area which unfortunately attracts a lot of hoons and spoils it for others, however Coolendel is quite expensive at $38.00 per adult fri & sat night and $18.00 per child age 5-16 years.
There is Nowra Wildlife Park and Camping Reserve beside the Shoalhaven River which is $10.00 adult and $6.00 child
age 3-15 per night and $2.00 extra powered site. You would have the attraction of the animal park for the children and your other half could fish in the river.
I haven`t stayed there, just been for a look see and it`s in a really great location. Have a great time wherever you decide to go.

Thankyou for the replies, so the consensus is that it probably isnt what we are looking for.
My husband and I dont mind 4wding but dont have that all important mod for the prado yet - Better Tyre's! We are still running the factory tyre's and the tracks there look like they may chew us up and spit us out!
From what I have read they have upgraded the track into the campground so it is now 2wd capable.

The camping area at the Dam has always been 2WD access, one of the reasons it's so popular with trailbikes.

We have decided to go to Lake Lyell in Lithgow for the weekend. Looks alright and much much closer. Thanks to everyone that replied.

Good choice, not a bad spot, lots of good driving for standard and modified 4WDs around the area too.

When you get down the bottom before the dam, there is a National Park campsite, it's not that big but you might get some peace there, you'll just the passing traffic.
