Title: GoPro Tips and Tricks
Post by: hookedon4wding on July 20, 2011, 01:53:16 PM
Hi all, well, I've had my GoPro HD since Christmas and have been absolutely loving it for taking HD footage of our 4wding trips.

I've noticed a few people recently have been enquiring about them or have bought them so I thought it'd be good to start a thread on using these things.

I'll kick off...

By far the best mount for 4wding is the suction cup mount. It mounts to any flat surface (which means most vehicle panels) and is VERY strong. Therefore, the best kit to get is the motorsports kit.

Here's a few accessories I've found very useful.

1. LCD BackPac (http://gopro.com/hd-hero-accessories/lcd-bacpac/): adds a view finder to the back of the camera and comes with a range of new back covers to fit the slightly wider body. Works really well and makes lining up the shots and taking photos really easy.

2. Skeleton Case (http://gopro.com/camera-accessories/hd-skeleton-housing/): this is a non waterproof case that has cutouts in the side to allow you to plug the power and video out cords into the camera. Great for shooting from inside the cab (through the windscreen) as you don't need to worry about the battery running down.

3. Tripod mount (http://gopro.com/camera-mounts/tripod-mount/): Great, cheap accessory which allows you to fit the camera to any tripod. I've used mine with some of the Gorilla Pod style mini flexible tripods with good results. You can then mount them on branches and uneven surfaces.

4. Antifog inserts (http://gopro.com/camera-accessories/anti-fog-inserts/): These are tiny little inserts that fit into the case beside the camera body. They work well at stopping any fog buildup due to differences in temp which can be an issue in the bush or near water.

The camera shoots in a few different modes (video, photo, timelapse) as well as a few different resolutions and frame rates. I use the 720p resolution option at 25 frames per second for 99% of my videos so they're easily uploaded to sites like Vimeo etc without taking up too much space. If you want to burn Blue Rays etc, then it also shoots at 1080p (full HD).

One cool trick that I saw the other day is the rotating egg timer base for taking 360 degree panning timelapse. There's a good thread on the GoPro Users Forum (http://goprouser.freeforums.org/stickie-gopro-timelapse-pan-timer-t701.html) explaining this with a few example videos. I reckon this would be great for using at the summit of tracks in the High Country etc as the clouds come over.

I bought one of these (http://www.dinodirect.com/kitchen-timer-mechanical-counting.html) the other day which I'll stick a quick release base on.

If anyone else has any tips, tricks and sample videos, lets share them here.

If you're interested, there's some videos on my blog (link in signature) which are all from the GoPro.

Cheers, Sam.

They are great aren't they, had mine for nearly a year now, I did make a mistake when setting it up on one trip, accidently set it to still photos, it took over 6000 still shots of the drive though the tracks up at Newnes Plateau back to camp, basically taking a photo evry second :cup:

Haha, that's a good trick! At least you could make them into a time lapse movie and sort of end up with a video  ;D

How large a card can they take and what sort of battery life do you get out of them?

The footage you have seems very stable, it this the mount or does the camera have electronic stabilisation?

Thay are awsom kits i have two of them now and have been getting some good shots with them, only thing I did do was got an ally tent pole and flated out one end and put a mount on it, good for getting to those tight spots for the shot....

I have a youtube account i have been slowly putting vids up there, http://www.youtube.com/user/reddogoffroad?feature=mhee (http://www.youtube.com/user/reddogoffroad?feature=mhee)

I have mounts all under the car, I can't wait to go four wheel driving and get some really good videos.

I will try to get a pick of all the bits I have, I ended up using a little juffy type box to keep everything in the one spot.

32gig is the bigest thay take but the battery will die before the card is full most time.

EDIT-
Storage

•Memory: SD card (SDHC), up to 32GB capacity (not included)
•Average recording times (using 32GB SD card):
                  ?1080p (30 fps): 4h 21m
                  ?960p (30 fps): 5h 26m
                  ?720p (60 fps): 4h 21

No stabilisation in the camera, its just a very sturdy mount.

For hand held use (especially when walking along a track) they aren't as stable but there is a small camera stabiliser you can get if you do a lot of moving hand held stuff.

I think they take up to 64GB card which is heaps. Not too sure on battery life. Haven't measured it accurately but I got most of a day of 4wding out of it before needing to recharge. You can also get a battery backpac (http://gopro.com/hd-hero-accessories/battery-bacpac/) which extends battery life a lot.

Edit, maybe it is actually 32gig maximum. That's a LOT of filming at 720p though.

How do you reckon mounting to a quick fist would go ? This thought is something that has intrested me for a while.
Is there any shops, retailers selling them for reasonable price's ?

Was thinking the mount was more like standard tripod, camera mount with the single screw.
Thanks.

i have had one since xmas last yr, i love the possibilities of them , while i like to use my for video footage, i can see there are a lot good things can be done with them, i haven't used my mine much but there are a couple of links to a few that i have done.

i did have a issue with mine, and going on what was said above i am guessing it was because the card was full, and i did not check how much of the card was used, silly me, but i had a heap of trouble getting it going i had it charging thru the computer for over 24hrs and couldn't get it going, is there anyway to tell the battery life in them. it all seems ok now that i have downloaded and formated the card.

but i hope to going on the cape trip next yr and hope to get some good footage of the crossings from the bull bar perspective.

One other thing I found out is a stubby cooler is a grate way to protect the lenses from being scratched.

For walking I bought the motorcycle chest strap, works realy well, I have a vid of my walking to Manning River falls, I'll see if I can dig it out.

Hmm.  The motorsport kit is $365 incl post at the link you put, and its $299US from gopro.com.

Add on shipping etc and for the $50 diff its probably worthwhile getting from Oz for warranty etc etc.

Depends if you're going to buy accessories as well (LCD BackPac, extra mounts, Battery PackPac etc). If you are then the savings on the gear will be a lot more than the extra postage as they'll bundle the postage up together.

New footage taken with my GoPro here if anyone is interested. (http://www.hookedonadventure.blogspot.com)

I actually sent an email to GoPro last night to see if they had any plans to release a wireless remote. This would be fantastic for 4wding as most footage is taken from outside the vehicle and its a bit of a pain to keep getting in and out to start/stop recording.

They replied this afternoon saying "stay tuned ..." so I believe there is one on the way. I'll definitely be getting one.

Cheers, Sam.

Check out Rambos Locker. http://rambos-locker.blogspot.com/

He does heaps of go pro filming on the outrigger paddling circuit and he is also the moderator of a gopro forum.

He has heaps of mods listed (external batteries, remote panning etc)

We put our GoPro up on a tripod during a camp set up and then sped it up for a great camping vid.

He he. The camp is usually covered in nettles so an hour with the whipper snipper saves liters of calamine lotion!

It's a good way of checking the site for unexpected surprises. :)

Okay so I'm finally pulling my finger out to order one.

GoPro Motorsport seems to be the best, in order to get the windscreen mount.  Does it come with anything useful for bullbar mounting too?

If I want to run it inside the vehicle for prolonged periods, I guess I should plug it into the DC.  But to do that, I'll need to buy the skeleton case as the case it comes with doesn't have the side opening to allow cables to be used at the same time, yeah?

Is the LCD backpack worth it?  But when you're using that, its no longer waterproof, is it?

i used one of the sticky things, and mounted that on my bullbar.. it's never come off. - can also use the suction cap window mount on the bullbar if you have a bit enough spot.

i didn't think you could run power to it while it was in use, and mounted. the case that comes with it does not have a side opening - correct.

YES it is worth every cent. and YES it is still waterproof. when you buy the backpac you get a new rear case that covers the LCD screen.

hope that helps.

You can record while charging, the skeleton case is good because if you are talking and want it on the vid too.

If you want to mount it on the bull bar i would get the rollbar mount as well nice and easy to chuck on quick and your not stuck putting it in one location.

A couple of things...

- Definitely get the Skeleton Case so you can charge if mounted on the dash or windscreen.
- We've used the suction cup on the bullbar with no issues.
- Buy a packet of anti fog inserts. They will fog up at times when in the waterproof cover.
- LCD BacPack is a must. So easy for lining up shots and taking still photos.
- GoPro reckon there's a wireless remote coming... let's hope so!

i just got one the other day off ebay mainly for on board vids of my 1/5 scale rc cars and boats, paid $288 plus $20 postage for a motorsports pack from performance downunder.(allmost felt like i was stealing it lol)
a couple of things iv picked up off other forums is avoid using cheap cards get a couple class 10 good cards, and use that little rubber thingy in the clip to stop that clicking noise.
you could use a tripod mount on your bullbar if you have a spare ant mount just use a big washer and a 1/4 bolt.

One other thing about the LCD Bacpack... With it attached, you can read the full settings menu, not just the 3 letter codes on the camera screen. Makes it easy to adjust in the field without having to have the manual.

Thanks all.  Placed the order just now.

GoPro HD Skeleton Housing
GoPro Anti-Fog Inserts
GoPro Handlebar Seatpost Mount
GoPro HD Motorsports Hero Camera 1080p
GoPro LCD BacPac
Tripod Mount

Figured the handlebar/seatpost mount would be useful for mounting onto roof racks or tent poles if I wanted some static type shots.  Plus I can use it on my MTB  ;D

The new HD2 looks pretty good, but it means you can pick up the HD1 nice and cheap.

We retail the GoPro cameras an we have 2 HD1 cameras left and they are the naked model. They come with the Waterprrof casing etc, just not extra mounts.

These last two are $285 delivered via registered post.

We will stock the new ones when they are released but they will be up around $390 odd.

Let me know if you want one of these, as they will not last long at all at this price.

Cheers

My 15 year old son save up his pocket money and bought the first HD model.  I was pretty sceptical of him spending his money on this but there are amazing.  I gave him a hand making a pole mount for the camera out of an old golf club and he used it to make this video with his mate and little sister skateboarding.  I can't wait to 'borrow' it on the next camping trip.  I might have to buy him a car mount for christmas  ;D ;D

Nice!

The only reason I ask is that I am a GoPro Reseller, and if you get a few of you together, I can organise a bulk deal.  They are Aussie cameras, not grey imports, and I am an Authorised Reseller - so it's completely legit.

If we can get 5 wanting a GoPro HD2 I can do them at $325 each for you.

PM If you are interested - I don't want to hijack this thread we can start another thread if need be.

Cheers

Well 2 weeks ago I purchased a new GoPro Hero2 and Wifi remote, it works really well, love not having to get out of the car to turn it on and off.

Here's some new footage from last weekend on the Pipeline track at Newnes

This is the GoPro forum where you go for instructions on how the update the firmware properly, so you can use your remote, lots of additional info to help with the process, one thing I discovered is, don't use USB 3 ports or your update won't work and you'll have to do it again.
