Title: How do you store your gerry cans
Post by: GGV8Cruza on July 19, 2011, 08:49:18 AM
I have found some mould in the bottom of one of my gerry cans and it was left with a couple of litres of water in it between trips, how do you keep yours during storage time?

Empty and closed - but I only use plastic water containers not the steel ones. Sometimes I get lazy and one will be left full - I just tip it out and re-fill before the next trip.

I voted full and closed, but in reality we leave them with whatever they have in them after a trip, we have dark coloured jerries so no light gets in to cause mould, but being that we don't leave them long enough for them to get mould either maybe that's why and not because they are dark coloured ;D

Just for info, a closed empty plastic container will cause it too smell.

We have this type BTW

I always empty mine and leave the cap closed.

By the way if you didn't know in the army water only stays in jerries for three days as there is a health risk after that of water born disease.

Cheers Rod.... 8)

ours are empty and open - they are the green plastic ones and the water in them is only used for showering or washing up. Drinking water is in the tank in the KK, is filled up at home and is filtered.

Either full or empty, dry and closed.  Camper tank is OK, check before a trip, jerries are still washed, but have never had a problem leaving water in them, usually from the rain tank.  If this worries you, you can get a bottle of water sanitizer ( bleach) from the home brew shop, follow the directions and you can't taste the difference.

I usually empty the jerry can/s into the CT tank once home, fill the tank up and let the jerry dry inside for a day then replace the cap until we go again.

OH !  You meant the ones for water ... I thought you meant for fuel.  Empty and closed for fuel.  Don't use them for water as I have a water tank on the CT.

I leave mine with whatever they had when we returned. I have the clear plastic type, never had any problem with water quality or mould. Always have a tarp over the CT when at home so jerries never see any sun while at home.

I don't use my plastic jerry cans too often, but when I do, when I get home, I empty the containers out and leave them to drain and dry upside down beside the house.  When they are completely dry inside, I loosely put the lid on them and store them inside.

I was once told to store them empty and totally dry or full to the brim so there is no air in them.
Don't know why tho?

We had trouble once with a clearish water container while camping the water tasted a bit suss and it made both Peta and I a bit crook, since then I just empty them after each trip, But before the next one I mix some Bicarb powder and warm water and shake it up in the Jerry cans and leave it for a bit before rinsing and filling with fresh water, Don't know if it helps but we havent had a problem since.

I don't use mine much either, so there empty with the lid just sitting on them in the roof of the house. The lid keeps the mice out. Its not really that big of an issue for me. If they get anything growing in them i just wash them out in a mild bleach solution before i use them
