Have any of our My Swag Members ever done a water pump impellor replacement on a Suzuki 6hp 4stroke outboard motor?
or are there any outboard mechanics that can offer some helpful advice in regard to this. In particular, how to split the leg from the motor head to get access to the impellor and any important procedures to follow. I am fairly mechanically minded and able.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I have a four stroke yamaha manual in PDF would that help, if not search the web, be creative, thats how I found mine ;D

if you plan on keeping ther motor for some time call up a mobile marine mech and pay him to come to your house , explain that you wish to watch/ help with doing the impellor that way you will know how if ever your out bush and need to do it. Then watch and learn ..it's money well spent.
I have done that before but always seem to drink to much and can never remember how to do it when it comes time,LOL ;D ;D

Hey Guys, thanks for your replies. I have actually searched the web over the last few days but can't find the exact information that i require and that is how to break down the the motor parts to allow me to get to the impeller. I had'nt thought of YouTube so will give that a try otherwise if all else fails i will resort to Jetcrews (plan B) and have another beer and call the experts.

You split the gearbox from the leg.Look at the top cavitation plate there should be 4 bolts undo.Check the the gear linkage usually has 2 rods joined by threaded collar,undo.gearbox should come apart.Impeller will come out easily now.I have not worked on Suzuki so that is why there are lots of Should's,but most motors are similar and with your mech knowledge you will be fine.
PS buy a spare impeller and keep in boat.

My Merc has a bolt hidden under the trim tab/anode.
If there is a cap above the anode to remove and access the bolt holding the anode, chances are there will be a last bolt under the anode( little fin behind prop)

I have done a few bit & pices on outboards , the best idea is drag out the camera . Set up a step by step pics as you go then when its time to put it back together again follow the pics . Remember torque settings , lock tite ,& a seal & gasget kit . Then a slab to enjoy when it works after the job :cheers:

Hi again all and thank you for all your help. I found what i needed on YouTube and have successfully removed the lower leg and stripped down the water pump. I then fitted the new impeller and gaskets etc and re-assembled everything using the recommended thread grease and fired the motor up. It is running great and pumping water once again.
Now i'm about to have that beer that has been suggested.

I did the same, searched the interweb, found a youtube vid and thought "I could do that". Currently have my Dad's old 9.9C mariner in bits waiting for parts to complete the job. while you have the spanners out, I'd recommend changing the gearcase oil too. any hypoid EP 90 gear oil will do but the marine stuff is pretty cheap. $7.99 for a 500ml bottle of Valvoline from Supacrap.
