I know alot could not make this years trip so I may do another next year. The same time, QLD school holidays. Just add your name and I will start things going when I get back from this trip.
Mark
-
I am keen as I could not make it this year, you must be a little crazy or have the tour guide bug bad, thanks Mark

MMMMMEEE MMMEEE MEEEE.
We will be leaving tasmanai on the 10th of Aprill 2012 heading for the tip. I believe we will be at leaving cooktown mid June. Hope to see you there
-
I don't know whether my circumstances will have changed by next year, but I will live in hope. Count me in.
Mal
-
Yes you can put us in two adults, have been to the tip once in 2009 and also four other times on fishing trips to various parts of the cape. I will be doing another fishing trip this year also about september. Good luck with this trip we will all be watching.
Kochy
-
Throw us in the hat too. Was actually thinking of tackling it the year after and I'll need to sort out some lesser priorities (work / holidays / $ etc) as we're doing a 5 weeker in Sept this year, but am keen all the same
Cheers,
Tim

Hello Mr McGirr,
I had an absolute ball this year doing the trip, pity I had me old man as a handbrake but he too enjoyed the trip. Mate if you want to put me back in for 2012 as a recovery bitch I would be more than happy to go again without the trusty Trackabout. Mark well doneon this years trip we could have done it without you but the trip would not have been the same. Thank you from duggie and his old man.
-
Pencil me in for this as well.

Very keen as I wanted to be in on this year but SWAMBOs birthday falls in that time and I would probably be doing it solo = big twouble..........prefer solo to single ;D
Now listen Lost "Its like Fosters, only used for export.. nobody really drinks it... but most beer tastes like poo these days... go UDLs" - UDL = Un-Drinkable Loss ($$$$), maaaaate buy the real stuff and mix it yourself

Jayne
-
Hi McGrirr
Count me in plus two additional adults for the trip, vehicle and trailer will meet the requirements.
Regards, Chris.
-
Taking the OKA? Can't wait to see that thing in action!
-
Symon ..... I think I need a bigger winch ;D
yogi
-
I should be able to make whole trip unassisted but I have a 16,000 Lb winch that's movable either front or back.
regards, Chris.
-
Chris .... I was kidding mate .... if you need recovering it will more than likely involve several 4x4's or a very large tree ;D
yogi
-
Hi Yogi,
I understand your not having a go at me. This is all new to me with the OKA, most are frightened by the size of this thing but I only weighing at 3700 Kg though my registered GVM is 5,500 Kg. The OKA looks big because it's high, it has no bonnet and engine bay in front like conventional vehicles; you are sitting beside the motor. Its length is no bigger than a Troop and no wider than a Patrol with big wheels and a flair kit. Anyway I'm off up that way in about three weeks time all going well.
Regards, Chris.
-
Chris ..... just been looking to see if you have a camper ...... if you do then I am guess you will only be about 1T to 1.5T heavier than everyone else 8)
Have you had it off road yet ? How did it go
yogi
-
Hi Yogi,
Yes I have camper fitted to back of OKA plus also towing a Cavalier off-road CT. I plan to leave the CT at Bramwell Station for run over the OTL. I'll pick up the CT on the way back. Regards, Chris.
-
Hi Chris, nice truck mate, is it still white? cause I saw one the other day in kelso but it was a green one and your right it's an illusion, they look huge, but I had a good close look at this one and it wasn't much in it and my troll, just the hight, mines about 2.1 high, so how high is your OKA?
troy
-
Hi Troy,
Mine is white, the green one lives at Saunders Beach. Height is 2.7 M ground to boat loader.
regards, Chris.
-
dam, Chris, that thing really is tall, your height might be your only issue, when I did the OTL in 09 I followed a bloke in a mitsy 4wd truck, he had untold issues with the height of his truck, especially when it was on a lean in a tight spot. he was out with a musette and a saw trimming limbs of trees, was a PITA to follow he was very slow, he said the next thing he was going to mod was a big set of brush bars to protect the front of his cab & wind screen. not that an OKA it any where as big as this thing was, just thought I'd mention it. the brush bars might be a good investment though.

I'm planning a trip for 6 families to the Cape at the same time that you (and everyone else) will be up there. I may have to keep a close watch on your itinerary so that we're not fighting for campsites or queueing behind you all on the OTT ;D
By the sounds of it, I'll need to avoid the Jardine River when you are there as well as DH doesn't need much encouragement to have a go, and since he's taken to calling me croc bait already, I don't like my chances.
-
Hi all, I haven't read the whole thread so please forgive me if this/these question(s) has/have been asked already. The wife and I are keen to give this a go.
I have basic off road experience, most was in a 4WD fire truck but plenty of private trips on sand and a bit in snow & some moderately rough tracks too. Even in my 2wd dunebuggy when I had it. You would be amazed where you can get in a dunebuggy. lol.
Anyway, just wondering what this trip requires. ie; skill level, equipment, vehicle mods, fuel reserves etc..
We have (will have) a 4wd and will also have an offroad CT by then. I firmly believe in safety in numbers so a trip like this would be awesome. As for this being a "Cape York" trip, all I know is where it is...no what to expect in the way of terrain, resupply points etc.. etc..
Many thanks in advance.

Hi Stuart
Regretfully I can only take so many people on these trips and as you can see we have a large number with their hands up already. All I can say is keep an eye on this as come January I will see what people who have their name on the list cannot make it and slot you guys in if possible.
Regarding what to expect and other things you mentioned I will be adding to the list these items and more after January when I have finalised the exact numbers. I hope this helps.

Thanks Mark.

Does anyone know if there is anything planned by anyone for a cape trip in Sept 2012???
We are hoping to go then.. Start of the school Hols or a week before so it overlaps...
We don't want to go on our own ( obviously )
It will be the whole family at the moment ( wife waiting on a date for her friends wedding in uk so if it coincides with sept then it will be just moi )
Sorry if I've hi jacked :-[

Hi Guys, i might be in, just got married last weekend in the vic high country and we are having our "honeymoon" next year and going to the cape, so far i have 5-6 other vehicles coming with us (kids included), we are leaving the canberra area june 1st and planning a 2 month trip up to cape then out to birdsville then possibley on to fraser. keep me posted on dates and so forth and we might see you there. cheers.
-

We are keen, so I will continue to monitor this forum. We will be traveling with Mr Bitchy....
-
Hi,
I would LOVE to do this trip ;D
However as I live in the diagonally opposite area of Australia, my own thoughts are to meet up with the rest of you at the designated starting point in Queensland.
I want to do a winter dirt road trip on the way over there ;D
FROM : * Cape Leeuwin * the most South/West point of Australia
TO : * Cape York peninsular * the most North/East point of Australia
. . . . . . . . . straight up through the red dirt centre of Australia
The trip just to get to Qld would be another great experience in itself
* How about any other Perth or SouthWest Australia guys consider coming along on something like this too * :cup:
-
mainey we would be very interested in your trip from coast to coast have you worked out how long it would take you to get to the meet point in cairns?
-
mainey we would be very interested in your trip from coast to coast have you worked out how long it would take you to get to the meet point in cairns?
Nope, would not be a fast trip because most would be on the 'desert highways' so time would not be a priority, but safety and secure traveling would take precedence, it would be nice to get there on time and without any car problems caused by reckless abandonment on hills like 'Big Red' etc ;D
I want to do a full video of the trip from start to finish too :cup:

we have only allowed a week each way to travel to and from cairns
-
we have only allowed a week each way to travel to and from cairns
should be easily doable in a week to get there, but I'm coming home via the wetlands and kakadu, Kimberley areas so will be taking some time of it
Taking the barra rod for some 'exercise' and a good feed
-
Spent time today looking for another set of tires more suitable for the long trip on corrugations and sandy conditions, picked on some Cooper Maxxx, but was told as I was going on sandy areas the tread pattern should not be too severe and should be more flat, and the Cooper AT3 would be the way to go?
I was told the Maxxx's severe tread patern will just dig a hole in the sand, and the flat surface of the AT3 will allow the vehicle to 'roll' along on the sand and not bog down.
Any thoughts on his reasoning, or I just believe the guy ??
the Maxxx was a dearer tire ???
-
In principle he's right. A more aggressive tread pattern tends to dig in in sand. Your trip however would be manily gravel tracks followed by some (!) muddy creek crossings up the cape. I'd go for the Maxx.
Personally I have my eye on a set of Maxxis Buckshots for the trip ;D
-
Enjoy all, I will be leaving Cairns around the 16 or 18th June so we may pass you guys along the way.

If any other members wish to join a July trip to the Cape let me know I'll start a new post to get a group in order.

-
i'm still heading up in mid july and so far have only got one other vehicle along for the trip with us, so the more the merrier ;D oh and teabag I'm still keen as on that road report

I'll be swagging but my brother will be towing.
