Title: bush saw - recommendations
Post by: kiva on June 07, 2011, 10:45:51 AM: We have the occasional need to trim up timber for the camp fire and wondered what people recommend. We don't have (nor want) a chainsaw. Rather, we'd like something compact that is easy to store, yet will cut branches etc for the camp fire.

Any recommendations?

Last time we went away, the in-laws used our tent because they couldn't take their trailer. The communal bow-saw lives in their camper. We had two axes, and gee they made hard work of cutting up the firewood. The bow-saw would have had it all done and dusted in 5 mins whilst barely raising a sweat. I really need to get my own - they pack pretty flat, and really are worth the effort to find a spot for it and carry with you.

I'd like to have one of D4D's folding saws as well, for when you can't get the big bowsaw into place. I've got a couple of fixed-blade saws in that same style, I find them not as easy to use as the bow saw (by a large margin), but they do certainly have their uses. A folding one would take up very little space, and is one of those "might as well have" tools.

Hi,
a piece of lami-panel edging or a bit of conduit that has been run through a saw to put a slit in it will do for a blade on the saw.
Use similar for spare blades.

I have a similar pole saw, but it can't be sharpened according to my local saw doctor.

I've often wondered about these saws, whether they work well, whether they're easy to use. If you do get one, please let me know what you think of it. They're certainly nice and small, so you could take it everywhere.

I have enough trouble keeping a bow saw on a straight cut, would be interested to know how straight the chain cuts.

I always have a bow saw and spare blade under the back seat. I havecut logs 12' round with it in a pinch.

Its better to pull with a bow saw, And if you do it with two people then its very important both of you only pull.

I also take a half axe for freeing the saw during the times when the blade was jammed due to pressure while sawing recently fallen trees that block the track, and are under lots of stress within the limbs.

'Camping World' stock a folding bow saw. Around $50 from memory.
