Hi all,
Doing oil filter and fresh oil, didn't have enough oil and bom. Could anyone please give me some websites or phone numbers of places that sell new or recondition engines please, any help would be great I have only had this bus for a week, trying to make it all nice.
Cheers,
Richard.

Not good champ. Maybe look in to repairing the one your've got or grab a copy of just 4x4s and find someone in there up the back. Look into maybe a 4.2 transplant, there's a few place's in that trader that sell and repair engine's.
-
That no good at all, you could try these guys

If not have a look on the Patrol forum as they will have all the info.
Good luck with it

The engine is 1998 2.8TDI, I rang the inlaw he said if I can get a whole new block we can go from there I just can't find anyone that sells them, it just makes you want to cry the first half decent car I have owned then this :(
-
Sorry to hear that, Have you tried calling a few 4x4 wreckers?
Rich

Take the opportunity to upgrade to the 4.2 turbo diesel.. Plenty of options and ways to go. Buy a running GQ and get everything you need... buy a wrecked GU from auctions and same... wrecker for engine/box.
or for $50k you can get the 6.6 Duramax conversion done with the 6sp alison auto...
Few patrol wreckers in Melbourne too... patrol-a-part etc.
Theres a few blokes on patrol forum who have a stock of 2.8's at home in the shed....
-
I have posted this on Patrol4x4 forum but no replies, I would relay like to get a new block then go from there.

search the patrol forum.
Theres a bloke that did that and it cost him cose to $10k from memory and he regretted going that way - well after the fact wished he'd gone another direction.
That was using a reco head he bought off a dude on there and all. It also depends what your going to reuse.
Have you pulled it apart to see how much is reusable yet?
-
Na haven't took it apart yet (Bit past me) only happened a bit after lunch, when I kicked it over it sounded like nuts and bolts in a blender, now it just makes a knock sound and wont kick over.
-
what went wrong with the oil change? they only take a bit over 6 litres of oil with a filter change. Are you sure it is the bottom end and not something in the top of the motor that has died.
What was the old oil like? was it making any strange noises before the oil change? how much oil did you put in? any more info on what happened?
-
It's not seized, that's a start. But without pulling it down it's hard to know weather a new block is even needed. How many Klm on the clock ?
-
I had a GU and blew the engine. Spent around $14 on a rebuild inc injectors and turbo. A mate and I stripped it out and put it all back together. Got the engine from H&M motors in Dandenong. At the injector and turbo place we were chatting with the blokes and told them the story. They both asked "where I get the motor?" "H&M" I told them. "You know what that stands for don't you?" They both said. "Hit and Miss!"
Lucky, the unit I got all worked out.
I sold that car three months later and bot a 93 Mav, 4.2 turbo.
I did consider dropping a 4.2 into it and at the time, Patrol-a-part were gonna charge $15 - looking back, that might have been a better option. Oh well.

How do you know it's not seized?

The oil and filter was probably fine for all I know, but you know new car I just wanted to make it all smick.

I could tell you somethings about that HM mob, do not go there. You should be able to do a 4.2 and box transplant for under ten, $6.500 engine $1.800 for a box. These are price's from wreckers, you can do a lot better than these prices. There have been a couple 2.8 wrecks around lately, You can pick up a rollover around $5,000 to $6,000, keep your eyes open and don't hurry and a cheap wreck will turn up. Take what you need and off load the rest.
How do you know it's not seized?
Cheers,
Richard.

If It's turning so you can hear the nuts and bolts sound it carn't be seized. If it was seized no turning no sound, maybe click click from the starter trying to turn it.

The knock sound is the starter, the engine is toast.
-
If it was running and you turned it of and next start it is seized, start by pulling the sump and inspect the bottom end and go from there.
-
Mate just so it's clear to me, you changed the oil and filter on the engine and previously it was running fine? You left it short of oil and started it and it started to rattle and bang?
If both above is right, you have run the bearings, the bore and pistons will be no worse a condition than before unless you really kept it running for a long while. I don't know patrols but in certain truck motors you can drop the sump and change both big end and mains bearings in place.
You need to measure the big ends and inspect the big ends for any major scoring on the crank. Don't worry to much about minor scoring but any out of roundness is taboo.
I would also rebuild replace the oil pump as it will be filled with bearing metal ( and filter again) it is always preferable to pull a motor fully apart for a rebuild and clean everything properly but not always viable, and when I do it I end up replacing everything so it costs me. Depends on how fussy you are I did above on a old Vechile for my dad and it ran for years. Usually the big ends are worse and you can even given them a light linish in place if necessary, but remember much more than 1/2 thou out a round and it's out a spec.
-
Id be pulling sump & checking bigends & mains these are the first to go. Iv had a 6cyl petrol motor run out of oil & only damage was to crank & bearings. Got crank reground & refitted with new bearings then all good. Didnt even remove the head.
-
Thanks for you help everyone, will give an update tomorrow on how it is going.
Cheers,
Richard.

I have recovered a few "blown" motors in my time so try the below IN ORDER.
This stuff is not hard for someone with basic tools and WILL save you paying for unneeded repairs. At least you will know the extent of damage.
1.Release pressure from fuel filter/line/system. Remove injectors, set aside wrapped in clean rags wet with fuel/oil
2.Socket on main crank pulley nut, turn in direction of rotation ONLY, arrow should be cast into block.
3.Turns yes/no. If yes, drain oil into MEASURED container and check volume and colour. If it looks new, all good. If it looks like brown metal flake paint, not so good, chunks even worse. Anything bigger than grinder swarf is BAD. :'(
4. If not turning, Remove sump and inspect carnage. Feel around for any obvious movement. Parallel to crank rotation is ok if very slight ie you can JUST feel it, any movement across the crank rotation is :-[
4a. Remove bigend caps taking note of which one goes where and in what direction as this does matter, inspect bearings on rod and crankpin(the round bit the bearing cap was around) anything you can feel with a fingernail is no good.
4b. (get it, 4b?? haha) If 4a is ok put all the rod caps back on, but not tight for now. ONE by ONE remove main bearing caps ie take one off, inspect, return back to place. If you take them all out your rods, pistons and crank may fall out onto your chest/crossmember. >:( They wont, unless of course you have the engine seperated from the gearbox.
4c. By now you will have discovered significant damage. Assess and get repairs/repalcement.
5. If turns and oil is good, refill with new oil TO SPEC quantity and new filter. Check starter for stuck pinion and exploded windings which will produce both the inability to start the motor, a shirtload of noise as the stator flogs about plus a click click when trying.
6. Re-assemble and try for re-start. ;D
All up, the above verification should take no more than a day of fun. Hopefully might save some coin too. If not, then at least you know.
-
Unless your oil pump was stuffed before you did the oil change, you must have really skimped on the amount of oil you put back in.
Like only 2 or 3 L instead of 6 or so.
-
I think we need more information about what you did and then what when wrong. I know the 2.8 suffers from timing belt/chain problems.
How did you not have enough oil? List up every thing that you did and then what happened and then take it from there.
Paul
-
the 2.8 has a full cradle to support the main caps so I don't think you can pull them out one at a time. you can check the Big ends though, if you get that far and it looks bad then no point continuing until you pull the engine out. If you end up needing to source another block, be careful of what it comes out of, I'm not sure if the earlier GQ 2.8 engine is exactly the same in a few critical areas, mainly to do with ancillaries. best to check it out first, Google is your friend.
-
Thanks for you help everyone, will try and get the in-law to have a look at it with me. Once again thanks :D
-
There's a 2.8 GU wreck on the patrol forum, under wrecking out. It's in brissy and the car was drown in the floods but it say's no water in the engine. Might be worth making an inquiry.
-
Na haven't took it apart yet (Bit past me) only happened a bit after lunch, when I kicked it over it sounded like nuts and bolts in a blender, now it just makes a knock sound and wont kick over.
I'd say timing belt has gone, its common on them.
-
Thank you so much for everyone's help, it's great when people come together. This Saturday the in-law is coming over then we are going to take out the engine then take it to his place strip it down and go from there, thanks again for all your help.
Cheers,
Richard.
-
Keep smiling mate u will sort it all out.
-
I will be taking some pictures and videos to post on here so people can look/watch them and give some feedback.
Cheers,
Richard.
