Title: Where does your dog sleep?
Post by: hookedon4wding on June 06, 2011, 04:27:02 PM
Hi all. I know a lot of us like to take the dogs away with us when we go camping. Really interested where yours sleep whilst you're away on the road.

Do they sleep in the camper on the floor? On the bed with you? In the annex on a mat? In the car? In their own tent? Somewhere else?

Cheers, Sam.

Now if I owned this CT on my own, they'd sleep on the hard floor, but The Man is a bit of a P.I.T.A so they stay outside, tied under the CT or the ute.  They are on beds (those doggy pillows), but this is really only okay around a built up area (or less than 3 hours from one on the eastern seaboard and sometimes not even then) ... when we head into the Outback, I'm gonna make him re-think this strategy as you just can't do this in a dingo area ... don't want my babies getting eaten or bitten or worse ... knicking off through the night and getting bloody lost!!   :police:

We adapted a kid's room for a customer's dogs. We were asked to put a zip around the edge of the PVC floor so they could have a place to pee at night! The sewer nearly fell off his chair when I explained the job. I recently saw the customer after using it for a year and he said the dogs loved it.

Good question, ours used to sleep under the Patrol but they are getting a bit big to be comfortable under there now.  SWMBO is making doggy pillows for them and I have made a fold up frame that will keep them up off the ground.  As far as cover over them, probably a tarp tied between a couple of trees or something...  Have not worked that bit out yet

unfortunately our beloved Chocolate Labrador passed away Friday week ago.  :'( :'(
javascript:void(0);
She slept on the floor of the camper in her own bed.  She had her only box of towels and mats in the CT, (so her gear was always packed) and the doggy bed we bought from ALDI which is held together by 4 bolts.

cheers

On the flor of the camper on a mat,
In the back of the car when we have the roof top tent on, or in the bottom annex of the roof top tent if I put it up.

Moses has his own swag - doggie size... rolls up just like mine and he loves it. He knows where ever his swag is - thats where he sleeps.

So the question is where do we put the swag? on the back seat whilst traveling, under the car on stops - or even under the ARB awning. At night it sits in the camper on the floor.

But he loves stealing a chair if its available!!!!

Just a quick word of warning....... When travelling with dogs, keep in mind if you're possibly in or near land that has been baited for dingo control, you don't have to be on a property that has been baited, even near one can pose a risk to your for legged mate, as birds have been known to pick up baits and fly off with them to drop them some distance from where they were laid... You would have to be pretty unlucky to come across one, but it has happened before.

Dogs are a real problem around me. They were aerial baiting on the weekend from a helicopter. They put signs up in the area when they do though. State forest over the patterson do it a few times a year too.

Our 2 that passed away late last year and early this year use to sleep under the awning of the tent and when we got the jayco would sleep under the jayco.

Funny story
When we first started camping with them my wife decided that they need their own tents so we got a couple of those $20 tents.
Set up the tents popped the dogs in each and went into out tent
I went out a couple of times to check on the boys (still awake but in the tent waiting for the fire to burn it's self out)
Then the last time I got up ready to kill the fire completely and get off to sleep I step out of our tent look at one of the dogs tent and there's a big hole in it quick look around camp in the pitch black panicing for a second or 2 I  find him sat by a dieing camp fire (now thats a camping dog ;D )
He go all upset when i had to put it out

Are the memory will never die

Well,

She's normally in the back of the car on her towels.

However last group camp I was at I left her to her own devices (when she just sleeps under the car).   This led her to believe that she could go and sleep in other peoples tents with them and their dogs (which she did).

Dirty little girl slept in two other tents for the weekend (and was very happy about it too!).

Our Boxer sleeps in his crate under the annex. The crate has a canvas cover to keep him warm.....although sometimes the missus slips him a hot water bottle. The dog is a big sook.

Can't sleep him in the camper. He snores and farts too much and it annoys the kids.

Our pair know the single bed is theirs so they have a blanket etc made up so they either sleep on that or on the floor, but not outside - just a pain when they both are storing and the hubby too - I want to go outside in the car.  We sadly lost our little 9yr old cocker on xmas day last year, she just loved the CT especially our bed as she could check out the passes by etc and we would often get a laugh from other campers who noticed her their, we really miss our Hollie Girl.   :'(

Our boy being a black labrador would love to share the bed with us but when the Grandparents allow him to go with us he has his own bed with a pet futon on it which is warm is winter and cool in summer.   The Grandparents love to doggy sit as they get him all to themselves  ;D.

Both our dogs are toy breeds so they sleep on the bed with us - they go to sleep at the foot of the bed, but by the time morning comes around they are nestled between the wife and I.

Our 2 sleep in their beds (steel frame shade cloth type) under the camper awning tied up with muzzels on (just in case they happen to get loose during the night so they dont pick up baits). In winter they have a jacket and i usually put a towel on the bed to stop the draft.

As you can seem my dog will sleep any where and is a true do of "NK"...lol

On our first trip out in the Jayco we went to Stewarts Brook and the first night the temps were in the minuses.  Whilst the yapper would usually just stay at the rear of foot of the bed he was trying to get under the covers....lol

generally however, he sleeps on the floor inside or on the lounge.

Troy sorry for your loss mate.  I imagine you must be devastated.  I lost my 4y/o pug 8 months ago and still have a lot of bitterness inside me.  The sadness doesn't go away.  It's hard for non dog people to understand, I loved my little girl as much as I loved my child.

If you think you're ready the best thing you can do is get yourself another dog (or two).  Not to replace your dogs, more so think of it as a living tribute to your mates that have passed.  The enthusiasm and cheekiness of a pup will keep you busy and I'm sure there's room in your heart for another.  And if you can get a rescue even better - most pounds are full atm, with any surrenders being down immediately because of insufficient space.

Cheers
George

Our two are always in a crate at night.  Crate is covered and they keep each other warm - except when a warn fire is to be shared.....

After losing our beautiful Blue Friend of 16 years in June this year, we have recently adopted this 7 year old bluey. The Dog has free run of the camper and sleeps on the floor when it's cold. But we have a "Hound House" which is the best dog kennel we have ever owned.  When he's sleeping outside - he loves it.  The whole thing collapses flat (takes about 1 minute) and fits neatly into the car or camper amongst table and bbq's. Highly recommend it.  Sorry - we dont have a pic of the Hound House camping - you'll need to check out the website to see it.   http://www.houndhouse.com.au/ (http://www.houndhouse.com.au/)

How long have you had your hound house? We have been considering one (well 2 actually) for a while now but am having trouble justifying the price as i would need 2 large ones. Do they just collapse into its self or do you have to pull it appart and store bits? We normally put the dog beds on the roof rack of the camper with a couple of ockey straps, so can you put the hound house up there as well or will bits fly off?

Hi HerGU,

The Hound House has one bar in the 'ceiling' of it that you slide out, then it all collapses flat and the legs slide in. No loose bits. Takes up less room than the normal 'trampoline' style beds as you don't have the legs sticking out. Watch the video on their website and it shows exactly how it folds up.  We baulked a bit at the price, but The Dog loves it and we use it full time under the back patio, then pack it up when we go camping.  It's very easy to clean and I think it is very robust - good quality canvas. I would not hesitate to recommend it.  We have the large one - and there is one size bigger. What sort of dogs do you have?  Ours is a big bluey (30kg) and he has plenty of room in it.

In our Jayco Outback camper, we only use the Queen bed. We leave the mattress for the other bed end at home and use the bed tray to store flat stuff while in transit, including the Hound House (and solar panels, camp table etc.)
Hope this helps.

Hi all, just wondering, where is everyone camping with their dogs.  Qld isn't very good for dog friendly places, especially near a beach, which is the only place my mutt likes to go really... which is good cause I like to surf too.

Around Brisbane (the ones I can think of right now) ...
Flanagans
Andrew Drynan
Darlington
Sharp Park
Spring Gully
Neurum Creek
Lake Atkinson x 2
Murphys Creek
Centenary Park

Yes.  None of those are at "the beach" but all of them have a beach of some sort.  Tell the dog to "get real" and go camping where and when he/she can.  Life is short ... especially for a dog!   ;D

Google "camping with dogs" and you'll find heaps more.  Buy the book "Camping With Dogs" and the whole of Oz opens up.

Here are ours at Andrew Drynan ... and they LOVED it!!

An update to my previous post on this topic.  On our recent trip, The Dog slept everywhere and anywhere.  We have called this behaviour, "Taking the Opportunity" (for a nap, that is).  This Dog can sleep any time at the drop of a hat. Very funny.

He slept under the table, on the bench seat in the camper, on our bed (but dont tell anyone), in his Hound House, in the car, on a beach hike in the middle of a track, and under the car.

Wouldn't have him any other way  ;D

Our beautiful Ridgy X will be sleeping on the floor in the annexe I think (still waiting on the trailer ;) ). I love the idea of one of the houndhouses....will have to have a look at one this week. She knows her spot. Re the QLD thing...we found the same when we were living in Cairns. Was actually a big part of why we came back to Vic. Boo loves coming with us, with swimming and fishing being her favourite activities. Our little staffy X was MAD about fishing...had to watch the hooks as he'd try to take the fish before they were reeled in!

My old Boxer was sent to doggy heaven 14 years ago next month and I still miss him :(

I've lost two dogs this year and the most recent one only two weeks ago. I guess age but I think that my second dog went down hill after her mate died and in the end went herself. It was a bit heartbreaking as I wasn't home to see her go and it was my son who had to ring and tell me (whilst having to bury her as well.) Anyway...

So, as I couldn't really bear too much more loss, I've gone and got myself two new dogs yesterday! Funny how things happen as I wasn't really thinking I'd get two but seeing as they're brother and sister, they're a great pair and their breeder was really happy to see them both go to a good home. Red stumpy tail cattle dogs, though the female hasn't got a short tail but both her parents did. Booth and Rosie are their names and they're warming to the ute already as they travelled so well on the way home. When I get some decent photos of them I'll post them up. At the moment they're just too busy wriggling at my feet in puppy adoration so I'll have to wait to a more sensible time!  ;D

I really want to take these guys camping with me too and as I see Kit_e has mentioned, having dogs with you really opens up a whole lot more camping!

What I'm curious to know is what everyone does re transporting their dogs in their cars? I see from some photos the dogs are on the back seat but I am thinking more of going the crate route, as then it can be their bed outside as well.

Sorry to take this thread a bit OT but it is kinda the same discussion!!  ;D

Duchess,

Currently I only have a 2wd sedan *sigh* and both mine get harnessed and attached to the back seat ... I have a short lead with a seatbelt buckle on it and they get "belted" in.  BF's dog gets harnessed and tied to the ute backboard (looks more like security door mesh), but she's short leaded and will not move around much anyway.

I myself would prefer to crate mine as well which is a tad hard in the sedan.  I've investigated puchasing transport crates, but find most companies only hire them for airport transport, which is frustrating to say the least.  If you can find something like the blokes that hunt pigs use for their pups, grab it, as this is more what I'm after rather than the flimsy fold down style that looks more like a cockatoo cage.

Ultimately, I'd like to transport all 3 dogs on his ute in crates, but they do take up valuable space and leave the pups open to the elements.

Dogs aren't allowed inside the Hilux (alas ... weren't allowed in the CT either ... hee hee).  I have a young dog that's never been on a long ute trip and an old dog that doesn't like a 100kph breeze too much.  I'd much prefer them to be crated (less worry for me) in something that has a cover to keep them out of the sun.  My old ute (which died alas) had a canopy with steel mesh sides, so they could move around at will but not get out ... and this is my preferred transport option.  Till this is sorted out, we will do our weekend trips with 2 cars when we take all 3 dogs ... or at least until the oldest one crosses the Rainbow Bridge (he's 12 now).

So sorry to hear of your losses Duchess.  It's a hard thing to go through (at the time), but they'll be waiting for you.  I think of my Digger alot, as he was my best and loyal friend and will never be forgotten.  I think those pups will keep you occupied with their antics enough to ease the pain somewhat.

Thanks so much, Kit_e for all of that...especially this last. Losing the brown dog was hard as she was Mark's and it brought on another whole aspect to grief. Losing my Mir was a small relief as she'd not been well earlier this year but sheese...why they do it when I wasn't around I'll never figure! As I had said on my FB page, we named Mir after the Russian space station that was in the news at the time when we got her and she certainly had a heart the size of one!

Yes, looks like a crate could be the way to go. I have just been searching the internerd (whilst sitting here watching the spectacle or is that safety car race that is Bathurst!?) and I see that the "airline approved" ones have a second floor in them so that any waste can drain away. I like this idea as it means the dog can still be kind of dry in there. There are also "soft" crates too but they don't seem to have this feature. However, the soft crates can be secured to the ground with tent pegs...the hard crates don't seem to have that feature.

we take our 3 border collies everywhere with us. They basically sleep where they want but we do take the dog beds with us and plenty of blankets in winter to keep them warm...

Due to limited room, we use 'space saving dogs'

The disturbing thing is they're half brothers and the top one hasn't had the snip!
