Ouch, good to see the ROPS worked. If they were in a standard Troopy they'd be dead.

They should have attended an accredited 4wd training course

You can just see under the rear window when it's on the tray a V8 Turbo sticker.  Cant say I'd want to be doing that speed in one of those   ;D

They will do that speed and a lot more if you push them, I have known them to push over 200

I call fake on the instrument cluster photo.

I've heard of mechancial speedos jamming at the approximate speed, but every single gauge in an electronic dash?

Then again the digital odometer is not on, so is it a built in crash feature for post crash investigations?

Plus I would have expected more damage at 160km/h or the car to be further away...

I watched a car crash investigation show on Foxtel and they talked about this. If the g-force of the accident is high enough it will freeze the gauges.

Interesting to note an absence of skid marks in the last photo too  ???

Possible combination of speed and other "performance enhancing substances" perhaps???

Cheers,

The accident happened last Wednesday at the first round as you enter South Hedland. NW Telegraph reported no fatalities. The driver did a great job with trashing the wall and the gardens, and it still looked like a bombsite on Thursday lunchtime when I saw it.

And i just read it right here on Myswag Forum so i have no doubt whatsoever that it is indeed Total Fact and does not contain any speculations or miss-truths.  ;D

A friend from Pt Headland sent me the photos with this "The accident yesterday was injury free, amazing the fella walked away from this. It wasn't me involved in the crash. The unofficial speed is 140 km ... Crazy". And yes it was the V8. From what I read even the D4D Prado is capable of 160km/h+, so I would say that the V8 would do that also.

It happened on the 12/5

When you get a rig like that up to 160km or beyond the steering tends to get a bit light . Something to do with the bash plate under the bull bar lifting the wheels off the ground . Or so Im told .
What would be doing at that speed , sure as hell not looking at the dash board & oil preasure . I reckon it might be the round about coming at you would gether your attention . What ever he took it didnt enhance his performance  .

I know a bloke who's done some pretty ridiculous speeds in all mine trucks, Hilux's, Prado's, Patrols etc - they all do 160kph no dramas, 175 is where they seem to struggle, apparently they feel relatively stable.

Our XR8 at anything above 160kph (track days) feels like it's going to take off, the slightest bump unsettles it. So much power but such little ability to stop from those speeds - ford  ;D

cheers to those that responded as I was mainly interested in how old the pics were and the final outcome of the driver,
was there any reports if the vehicle was stolen at the time or was it an owner/driver?
cheers

I had 750-16's on split rims on my 80Series at one stage.   (Like the troopy in this thread)   The tyres were N -speed rated which from memory is a maximum of 140km/hr.
I had it up to 160km/hr in the NT in the good old days.   Didn't even have full throttle but the cruise control kicked in (ie SWMBO's elbow impacting on my ribs with audible warning.)   Seemed stable in a straight line but...... ::)

Being the V8 diesel troopy, he could have pulled the wall down easily instead of driving through it, those diesels have some grunt...drove one in the Flinders...cruised down some of the tracks at 35kph in 5th, foot down and it gets up and goes.

I drive one of those exact models (including the mine spec) at work, at 100km/h they handle OK, 110km/h the handling gets a bit light, at 120km/h I'm not comfortable driving it.

At 160km/h you'd be fighting to keep it on the road unless it is dead straight.
