Title: Camp roasts ... Cobb or cast iron camp oven ?
Post by: craigtempo on May 09, 2011, 09:48:33 PM
OK don't know if its been asked before .

Cobb or cast iron camp oven for a roast ? whats the advantages of each type ? what does a better roast ?

Ive successfully roasted my first bit of lamb in a camp oven and it was beautifully  ;D it is only a small 10 inch oven but i want a bigger one .

so which way to go ? Cobb or cast iron ?

I'm must say I'm leaning towards cast iron for a few reasons .

1... cost .

2 ... Ive cooked with 1 already and the results were fantastic .

3 ... can use on a fire so no extra fuel needed .

4... can set it up in my kettle BBQ if need be

Its not the equipment its the operator . Take my SWMBO no no no you cant have her but she has really taken to the cast iron cooking . I have a cobb as well but the camp oven is easier to use & clean . Though its horses for courses the cobb can be used in the CT , or camp oven in the cobb can go well  ;D

Have both and prefer the cast iron camp oven meal...when doing roast, can fit more roast and vegetables in the camp oven than the cobb...but its the atmosphere of sitting around the fire that just makes the meal SO much more enjoyable.
But the COBB is the next best thing when you have to settle for not having a fire.

My clan loves the camp oven, we've got a couple of sizes. One for roasts and the smaller for breads/damper and deserts :cup:

It just depends on what you do more of. We use the cobb at home for roasts, and use the camp oven when we camp. They both have their good points. I'd rather use the camp oven to cook but don't have a firepit in the back yard.
Cheers.

The last cobb i saw in operation took just under 8 hours to do the roast however I think that had more to do with the operator, I do prefer the camp ovens myself

I've never used a Cobb so can't really comment on there pro's and con's, but for me and my family a Cobb is too limited in size, though saying this alot of people swear by them.
As you have already got a 10" Camp Oven i'd be grabbing a bigger one and then you can do bigger roasts in the bigger oven, and veggies or whatever in the other........ and yep like Mark said above, there's just something really special about cooking over the coals.... i reckon nothing better then sitting around with the clan hearing the the light sizzle coming from the pots, the sight sounds and smell of the camp fire and the occasional teasing scent of a wonderful roast or dinner of your choice cooking away....... i'm pretty sure you won't get the same experience from a Cobb.
Not to mention, if your only buying the standard camp store ovens, you can get quite a collection of ovens for the price of a Cobb..... and really there is nothing wrong with the way they cook.
Bloody hell, i'm hungry now!!! ;D

Camp oven by a mile...And we have both but have not used the Cobb in two years. Maybe I should fire it up and see if it's any better than I remember. I just love the control the camp oven gives me.

We have both and my vote is for the camp oven every time, however if you are somewhere you cant have a fire the Cobbs a good second

We have both and used at different times. We use the camp oven when camping with friends (they're fanatical about e'm) and they have the big fire going and the Cobb we can set & forget when we are off for a mornings outing and don't have to have a fire going or watched.

I'm fairly new to the camp oven but my mate's wife turns out some great meals from the camp oven.

regards

If you take the hot plate out of you cobb & insret your camp oven the best of both worlds . No probs cooking in van parks that dont allow open fires . Heat beads in & on top of the cobb job done Easy . Think outside the square

Never used a cobb. Have a large 9qt camp oven and cooked roasts and dampers. When everyone brings a camp oven and you have 3 different roasts going on the fire for the buffet dinner and the vegies in the coals, its the smell and the sizzle and the anticipation of when it's ready that makes the camping all that more enjoyable.
