Title: Need a 2nd Fridge?
Post by: Crosslander on May 03, 2011, 12:42:01 AM
Hi all - new here.... haven't made an introductory post yet but thought I would share this with those who may be interested....

Not sure of the quality but Aldi have a 3 way fridge on sale next week which SEEMS dirt cheap..... http://www.aldi.com.au/au/html/offers/2827_17773.htm

Would be interested if anyone has any previous experience with these beasts?

Cheers.

Mark.

It only calls itself a cooler, I think repco were selling cheap ones a while back that struggled to get things really cold. I have an old chesscold i bought dirt cheap off ebay that i use for long trips. It was in perfect nick and cheaper than that. If 3way is your go then that may be another option

The original post referred to it as a second fridge.
Aldi can have some good stuff but to me they are still a bit of an unknown.
I have an Engel in the car and a Domtec three way in the Hawk (standard fitting).   The two complement each other.   The Engel gets things cold (or frozen) quickly and is simple and reliable.   But it needs electricity and in the bush that can be a limited resource.   The three-way Domtec is very cheap to run for extended periods on gas.    I don't bother using it on 12V as its a pain to lift the lid of the Hawk to turn it on, and it can flatten the main battery of the Patrol within a short time when stationary.   Usually any perishables can be carried in the Engel until we get to camp.   Then the food is transferred to the van and the beer goes into the Engel!

lol - should have realised after lurking here for a while that a opost mentioning fridge and cheap in the same sentence would get me shot down in flames.

I do have questions about how people use only 2 way fridges when bush camping but will go off and read the multitude of threads I'm sure exist before asking.

Great first post Mark :) Other ideas are 'should I buy a toyota or a nissan' or 'do I need this DC-DC charger' :) Oh and welcome to myswag. We use the Waeco in the Prado and Dometic (3 way) in the Goldstream. If I bought a new camper a 3 way would not be my preference. That said the Aldi unit is a good addition if you're bush base camped.

Without seeing it in the flesh it could be one of those coolers that cool down to 30 degrees below ambient so if it is a 40 degree day then it will cool to 10 degrees.

I dare say they would only work well on Gas.

As has been mentioned the Aldi 3 way fridge has the same specs as a 3 way fridge that I bought from REPCO on sale, even the price was the same. I bought it as a cheaper option for a second fridge as we already have a 40 ltr Engel :cup: Anyway I now own a second 40 lt Engel :cup: I became convinced pretty quickly that the 3 way really couldn't be trusted with anything perishable, it ran O.K on gas but was 12 volt suicide when run from a battery.

A ran a few tests on its performance when we spent a couple of weeks at South West Rocks in summer (not the hottest place in NSW by any means!) All test were conducted connected to gas, the fridge not me!, and in a shadded, well ventilated area. I placed the trusty Engel thermometer inside and didn't open the 3 way fro 24 hours. The lowest temp it fell to was - 1, this was during the night when the outside temp was 16 degrees. In the middle of the afternoon the temp rose to 12 degrees with the outside temp being, at most, 33 degrees. I had the 3 way turned to the coldest setting the whole time.

The 3 way proved very effective when it spent a week in the Barrington Tops....in winter >:D >:D

My favourite saying is, "Buy right and cry once."

That's why we now run two Engels :cup:

I'll sit down now ;D

Cheers,

Disco.
