Title: Be careful what you leave in your car no matter how safe you think it is.
Post by: MR MAC GU on April 18, 2011, 08:32:22 PM
Last night some rotten mongrel broke into my car and stole or damaged about $8000 worth of gear and equipment and caused about $2000 worth of damage to the car.

We live in a safe/secure/well lit area (or so we thought until this morning) and we were robbed while we slept.

The car had started to be loaded for our upcoming Easter trip.

They damaged and stole the following...

-Damage to passengers front door and lock
-Tried to steal the stereo but broke it
-Tried to steal the DVD player but broke it
-Stole the Engel fridge
-Stole the GME TX 3200 UHF
-Stole the GME TX 3400 UHF
-Stole the Magellan Explorist GPS
-Stole the Garmin Nuvi Street map GPS
-Stole the recovery kit
-Stole the first aid kit
-Stole 4 camping chairs
-Stole the camp table
-Stole various other items ie tyre repair kit, tyre deflators, swiss army knife etc etc etc.

It does not appear that they tried to steal the vehicle, in fact it appears that they may have been disturbed just before stealing the wheels, the wheel lock nut was fount beside one of the wheels.

If anyone sees or hears of anyone trying to sell these items please let me know.

Lets hope my Insurance covers at least most of it...(fingers crossed)

Cheers Glen

What a great way to start the holiday ???, it would be nice to catch them & allowed 10 minutes with them by yourself. Hope you can still get away for the break.

oh our new modern society is a winner isn't it.

Sorry to hear about that mate.

Hope you get it all back. I just sold my KK so have all the camping gear sitting in the shed ,we are not going away over easter so if you need to borrow any gear just sing out.

Sorry to hear that mate,

I can never understand why people do this. I've lived in some of the least desirable areas of Aus over the last 40 odd years and have never been touched.  I moved into a 'better area' 6 years ago and have been done twice since.  Who knows? - I just hope your insurance covers it.  Best of luck for the future.

Regards
Mark

Bugger, but keep an eye out as they were more than likely scoping your vehicle because of the 4wd gear. They are obviously a 4wd enthusiast. Keep an eye on local, couple suburbs away young 4wders.....Hope all works out and good luck.....

Dont worry we will still be able to get away for Easter.

we can make do with out most of the stuff for one trip only pain in the bum is the fridge. We still have the fridge in the camper but it will be tight for 5 people for 5 days living out of one fridge...might have to get the old esky out of retirement...lol

Sorry to hear about this, it really sucks. I too have had virtually the same thing happen many years ago. Almost nothing was covered by my vehicle insurance - BUT.... as it happened in my driveway and on my property, my household insurance covered ALL contents  (not damage to vehicle or fixed contents like radio). Even down to my swiss army knife, tyre deflaters, GPS, Bolle sunglasses etc.. that they stole.

I too think a 4WD enthusiast was responsible, they took my latest model brass staun deflaters and left behind the old alloy ones  - who would know that?

Cheers

Captain

I double this.....

I wish you an enjoyable trip despite these low life idiots.
(Nice offer from Jetcrew too, swaggers are no.1.)

Happy Easter and travel safe.

That's not good dude. I hope it's not too painful sorting it all out and your loss doesn't cost you too much.

I have a few booby traps setup on our rig, sure you can steal things but you'll most likely get injured in the process. No doubt I'll get done for grievous bodily harm when something does occur, but it will be easy to find who attempted to steal something.

Bugger Glen - that's bad news. That's quite a shopping list that they made off with - I second Wilsil's comments and hope you get it all back brand new through insurance.

I just heard today that my brother-in-law's commodore got done over last night, and they've lost their camera and GPS. Because it was parked at his wife's work, they're not covered under their home insurance, and their car insurance excludes items left in the car unless they've been listed on the policy (which these weren't). So it looks like they'll just have to do without. It's a nasty business, that's for sure.

All the best with it.

Well at least you it happened at home if that's a good thing.
A couple of years ago was traveling up east coast following coast all the way from Melbourne ended up spending to many days at some good places like Lakes Entrance anyway was doing I thought I do a bigger day to cover area that where I had already been and instead of using camper would stay in motel, got to north side of Nowra about 8pm then went and got food came back to motel at around 10pm. Never up coupled camper and parked it right in front of door of Motel. Set the alarm for 4 am so a bushy queenslander could drive through Sydney with less traffic.
Left almost everything in car and camper only got change of clothes out really.
Anyway got out to car at bit after 4am to find 2 broken windows in cruiser with everything inside gone. The list was a bit longer than the starter of this post, the worse thing was if it can be was we had been away for bit over 4 weeks so had tons of photos that you can never get back.
In hind sight I'm glad they never took the car and camper a well.
Rang cops but they could come until 5pm later that day and they said that even if they finger printed the car they might might not find anyone, I gave a list of serial numbers for some of the bigger items but to this day not one thing has came back to me.
A Toyota agent just south of Sydney think it was Illawarra were the best, got new glass in car and I was away again by 3pm
Insurance was no help at all I had a $500 access and glass was less than that so I paid for it, rest was not covered by car insurance. Was told it might be covered by house insurance but that wasn't to be either. At best if I had told insurance company you were taking certain items with you maybe I could have got a claim.
All I can say is when away take care

Sorry to hear about your loss, hope it didn't stuff your plans to much,

After i had my hilux  stolen from a public road the insurance company kindly informed me that nothing but the vechile would be covered, so that means that anything inside, eg recovery gear, gps, kids dvds ect all gone. So if you want these types of things covered when you're on the road you need to put them on your house contents policy as a specified portable especially laptops cameras and your fridge.
sorry about the hijack ;D

Thats what you have you have to do, put it on house and contents insurance, then you have to tell them everytime you have them in your car and dates when your going away. Not all insurance companies are like this I guess

That's lame as. They must have had a set up to get away with all of that. Sounds like a big rottweiler might be the go!
