Title: TC Yasi - OK, Now I'm a tad concerned
Post by: Paul and Bern on January 31, 2011, 07:25:51 AM
:-[ Just Listened to ABC and local weatherman at airport.  Yarni Cat 1 expected to grow at one Category per day, but destructive winds may be up to 400km from centre.  That means for example if it hit say Townsville, both Cairns and Mackay would experience winds as bad or worse than what we (Cairns) received in Larry.
It's not looking pretty, Larry was bad but only lasted a couple of hours, this one could last 3 - 4 times as long as it is expected to be 3 -4 times the physical size (not necessarily strength), and expected to cross Wed night / Thursday at present.

Please be aware and take precautions so that we all can walk away from it after.
Paul

Ok more from Bill at Cairns BOM, expect 15 - 20 hours of winds on the coast of over 70km/hr....... to far out to predict crossing but prob Ingham / Townsville area.....

I'm with you Paul, I'm not one to generally get too excited about cyclones, but Yasi has got me "quietly concerned" at the moment. Not worried, and I'm sure with the right, sensible precautions everything will be fine. But it is one heck of a storm just on size alone, and as Geoff says, they can be unpredictable things.

A lot can change between now and then, so we'll just have to take it a day at a time. I believe the track has been updated since this one:

Either way, it's going to be a fun few days. The guy from the BOM on the radio this morning was talking about how they expect it to stay formed as a cyclone as it tracks inland. Goodness knows how much rain that's going to dump into the gulf country/channel country. Cause the one thing the Balonne and Condamine rivers need now is more rain!  :-[

Ahh well - wait and see I guess. I might have to fill up the water tank in the camper, stop it blowing away...

Thanks!
Matto :)

It's a good one but preparation is the key. Already we a ready for the fun and fravolity it may bring. I hope not but best to be prepared now and not put up with the mad rush/panic.......I find it funny what people buy in preparation, it can be amusing..... ???

That's an angry looking cyclone...

What's the bet that Bunnings have sold out of:
A) generators, and
B) "Cyclone Kit" buckets?

Thanks!

That's an angry looking cyclone...

What's the bet that Bunnings have sold out of:
A) generators, and
B) "Cyclone Kit" buckets?

I went into our local Bunnings on Tuesday afternoon and saw they had about 30 generators in stock, ranging in size from 1kVA to 5kVA.  I was in there again last Friday (after the cyclone watch was issued) and they had 2 left, with a group of about 5 people arguing over them!

Yasi isn't 'that' powerful of a cyclone, but man it is big, I've never seen one that has a gale force wind boundary that stretches from Cooktown to Mackay.  That's just insane.

They have now ordered evacuations for everyone in the brown zone for Mackay, just as well you and I were already heading off graylyn!

LOW LYING RESIDENTS NEED TO RELOCATE

ATTENTION – RESIDENTS IN THE BROWN EVACUATION ZONE

Premier Anna Bligh has urged all residents in the Mackay area to make immediate preparations as Tropical Cyclone Yasi continues its path toward the North Queensland coast.

Ms Bligh said the extremely serious weather event now looked likely to cross the coast overnight on Wednesday and all residents should now be taking precautions, including stocking up on essential items.

“Latest advice from the Bureau of Meteorology is that this cyclone will be accompanied by significant flood in low lying areas from storm surge,” Ms Bligh said.

Mackay Mayor Col Meng said residents in low lying and waterfront areas in the Mackay region should make arrangements to relocate on Tuesday, as it may be too late on Wednesday

“Advice from the Weather Bureau is that coastal areas in Yasi’s path will begin to experience wind gusts beyond 100km an hour early on Wednesday."

“If you live in the brown evacuation zone then it is imperative that you leave your home in plenty of time and relocate to friends or family in high places.”

THERE ARE NO EVACAUTION SHELTERS IN THE REGION

“So I implore all of those people who live in the Brown Zone to leave their homes in plenty of time and relocate to friends and family."

“If you have family or friends on higher ground, go to them."

“I understand leaving your home will cause anxiety but I would rather people were inconvenienced for a couple of days than place themselves in dangerous situations."

Cr Meng said to check information about whether your house is in a storm surge area, maps are available on council’s website www.mackay.qld.gov.au.

Premier Anna Bligh said the government and State Disaster Management Group is in close and constant contact with council.

“I urge all residents of these coastal communities to treat this cyclone as extremely serious – we are facing a difficult time and I want everyone to remain as safe as possible.”

Cr Meng will make further announcements as information on the cyclone comes to hand.

THE BROWN EVACUATION ZONE MAPS ARE AVAILABLE ON COUNCIL’S WEBSITE AND WILL BE AVAILABLE IN TUESDAY’S DAILY MERCURY.

You know the worrying thing is, the Govt and Met bureau are telling us now.  Normally it has to be blowing the door down before they admit it's there.  Is that just the internet or what.....
I bought more 2 stroke and cutter bar oil + 40L unleaded, think I might have to visit my Brother in Law in Townsville maybe Saturday....

Yes, be safe everyone.  I am going to my son's place at Nebo, 120k west of here.  If the storm follows it's projected path we will still feel some effects from it but they certainly won't be as bad as if I stayed here.

See you on the road, Symon

No shanegtr we don’t as far as I know, there has been some talk about it but it hasn’t happened.

They are now worried about the storm surge tomorrow night as it could come in on the top of a large high tide, Cairns 2.4m at 8.52pm and 3.0m on Thursday 9.38am.

If anyone has to evacuate before the storm, and you have nowhere to go you are welcome up here, although after Larry I can’t say I wont get the affects of the cyclone, at least I wont get any storm surge at 1000m.

We are in the process of securing properties, cancelling open homes and removing signs. There is uncertainty of where it will cross but it looks like we will get hit hard.

There is already panic buying in the shops and we expect power to be out for a number of days.

There is talk it may develop onto a Cat 5.

It looks like making landfall wed afternoon which is better than hitting at night.

:-[ Umm, who took over the steering while I slept?
It wasn't me, but I'd like to have a talk to whoever it was too!  ;D

I'll tell you what, it's got everyone here at work in a flap this morning. But then again, it doesn't take much to get this mob panicking, I've got to admit. One of the girls is telling everyone that they'd better go home now and hide.

It's certainly looking like it will be a wild couple of days. We'll be fuelling up the cars and securing the house tonight. Have already filled the tank on the camper, and have the ARB fridge cooling down on 240V in case we need it.

Nothing really more that we can do now, other than sit around and wait. I don't think my neighbour will need to worry about having to move the big pile of mulch on his driveway anymore, somehow. I think he'll be move concerned about fishing most of it out of his pool...

Thanks!
Matto :)

Thanks for all the well wishes from swaggers all round the country.
Have lived in Cairns for 35 years, so experienced a few cyclones in that time, but I'm telling you, this one is really doing my head in!!
Usually I'm pretty laid back about them, but not this time - I'm feeling very freaked out.   I just can't get over the size of this thing!!!
Oh well,  we're as prepared as we can be, so will just have to sit it out for as long as it takes to blow over.

Imagine reading this its a Cat 5

SEVERE TC YASI IS A LARGE AND VERY POWERFUL TROPICAL CYCLONE AND POSES AN
EXTREMELY SERIOUS THREAT TO LIFE AND PROPERTY WITHIN THE WARNING AREA,
ESPECIALLY BETWEEN PORT DOUGLAS AND TOWNSVILLE.

THIS IMPACT IS LIKELY TO BE MORE LIFE THREATENING THAN ANY EXPERIENCED DURING
RECENT GENERATIONS.

THIS IMPACT IS LIKELY TO BE MORE LIFE THREATENING THAN ANY EXPERIENCED DURING RECENT GENERATIONS.

I think they put that there to spell it out to people who are 'used to cyclones' that they haven't seen one like this before.  I was listening to ABC Radio and there was some silly old bag who lived in Ayr complaining that they they got all prepared for nothing since Anthony went further south than expected.  The presenter was trying to point out it is better to prepare and then have it pass elsewhere than to be hit and not prepared - but she didn't get it.

I wonder if she is prepared at the moment?
Title: Re: TC Yasi - OK, Now I'm a tad concerned

Details of Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi at 4:00 am EST:
.Centre located near...... 15.7 degrees South 151.7 degrees East
.Location accuracy........ within 20 kilometres
.Recent movement.......... towards the west southwest at 30 kilometres per hour
.Wind gusts near centre... 295 kilometres per hour

.Central pressure......... 924 hectoPascals

That wind speed is not looking good, and now it is a cat 5.

The radar makes it look a tad benign - the radar only shows rain and there's not a lot at the moment. But that rain is certainly moving fast around the eye! It really is a monstor storm.

Stay safe everyone!

This is the Willis island Met page - shows the rapidly increasing wind speed - 54 kts gusting to 72kts when the eye was more than 100km off the island at 6.30. Pressure rapidly dropping as well.

All of you in the path of this monster must be truly petrified.
Just make sure you stay SAFE.
All we can do is think of you.

Good luck

Ive been following it here (http://"http://www.goes.noaa.gov/sohemi/sohemiloops/shirgmscol.html") Shows it pretty well.

It certainly looks like its a dozzy.

For those who stay and sit it out how do you know your house will provide shelter in such high winds. Im not 100% but I think I would put the family in the car and go for a bit of a drive somewhere far away.

Good Luck FNQ

You Queenslander must have run over 3 chinamen, floods down south now a blow up north,

Thoughts with all our FNQ friends. Have family in Cairns who we understand are bunkered down.

Looks like Willis Island radar is gone, apparently staff had been evacuated.

Keep safe all.

Had some very gusty rain just over an hour ago, but now it's rather pleasant here at Mt Sheridan.  It's giving me a false sense of security - keep thinking maybe it won't be too bad after all.  Just kidding myself really - am very anxious and yes, it's the wait that gets to you, eh.  Take care and stay safe.

The way it looks at present on BOM it will give Cardwell and Ingham a good touch up. I think Cairns will just get the outskirts and since we are north or the eye we shouldn't get the tidal surge but only time will tell......

I remember back around 1969 I was invited to join the Australian Army and my first posting was to Enoggera in Brisbane. Because my battalion (9 RAR) was only starting to return from Viet-nam, myself and 11 others were required to be the guard for Vic Barracks. A TC was predicted to hit the coast overnight about 600 miles (or kms) north of Brisbane.

The wind during the night in Brissy was very VERY scary especially with flying debris, and we were a long long way from the centre. I pray God keeps you all safe.

That's what I saw on the site too.  Always seems to be less severe when you're north of the eye, thank goodness.  Feeling not quite as anxious now - just hope I'm not being too hopeful.   Do so feel for those further south.  Wouldn't swap spots for quids!!

Stay safe to all those Qld'ers that are in the path of Cyclone Yasi.  Having lived through Cyclone Tracy and witnessing the effects of Category 5 cyclone Monica in 2006, everyone should NOT underestimate the power of these things.

If this cyclone hits the coast as a category 5, it will cause a fair bit of trouble across the mainland as it will no doubt retain a fair degree of power for a while yet.  You only need to look at the effects of the previous ex-cyclone that is presently moving through NSW!

Mrs T & I camping in Tassie. Uncle & Aunt in their 70's house sitting Kuranda home, north fcing that sits on a high hill, south of the township.

Uncle reports no electricity, no damage, no trees down though increased leave litter. He & aunt slept well, once their phone stopped ringing.  Not bad for their first cyclone!

We, and they, are very fortunate.

Yay!!  We have phones and internet again!
Well, that was a Wed night to remember!!   Some pretty hairy gusts of wind there for a few hours - shut the computer down once the lights started flickering - but lo and behold, we never lost power!!!!!     Now, that is definitely a first for a cyclone.  Still can't believe it!! How lucky!
Hope everyone faired as well as we did.  No structural damage just the garden took a beating.
We so feel for those around Tully, Mission Beach, Cardwell etc.   It must have been so scary to go through it down there.
Couldn't believe what the foreshore of Cardwell now looks like.  Use to always stop for a pie on our way to Townsville and walk through the trees down to the little beach.   What terrible devastation!!
Once again, Cairns has been spared.

Sorry Bert but while I know you mean well, I can't let your comment go through to the keeper.

While I'm certainly thankful that TC Yasi did not hit any major population centres like Cairns or Townsville. I still think that we should'n't forget that at least three towns were utterly devastated by this monster storm. Tully, Mision Beach and Cardwell got smacked by Yasi with a level of destruction commensurate with a CAT 5 Cyclone.

Cairns and Townsville did receive relatively little damage (but storm damage none the less)- but they were 130 and 150 km from the impact zone.

My thoughts are with those around the impact zone whose lives have been turned upside down (literally). In these areas, the damage is catastrophic.

That so few lives were lost is testament to the preps made by all you Queenslanders - great job. But the real work has just begun - I know where my charity donations are going this year.

Friends at Tully came through with little damage to house.  It seems you either got little damage or lost the lot, no in-between.

Thanks for all the wishes,
