Title: Howdy from the nation's capital..
Post by: morgansmall on January 16, 2011, 09:00:45 PM
Hi all,

Just picked up our first camper trailer today - an '08 Complete Campsite Nomad.  Running on the back of our '09 Hyundai Santa Fe diesel manual, which towed it the 280km home comfortably (apart from overtaking up a hill with too little a run up)

Anyhoo we've got all the usual decisions to make - do we keep the Santa Fe or do we go for a 4wd to get the 'get out of jail' features we may need if we do do some of the driving we would like to?  Do we put the fridge on the factory fitted slide in the trailer or do we put it in the car?  What the heck electrical setup are we going to need (anyone know a good auto electrician in the ACT or Queanbeyan?!)

These questions and more I'll be asking at some point.  And looking forward to discussing them all with yerz.

Cheers, Morgan

;D Welcome morgansmall.  Looks like you've caught the 'mod itis' bug already, the cure can be found in the my CT and my CT build sections  .
Warning the electrical section can be hazardous if not adequately prepared  >:D
but ask away lots of good knowhow on here

oh... and by the way... don't forget to get out, get it dirty, and have a ton of fun

Welcome Morgan, I am from your area and I use Monaro Offroad in Queanbeyan for my electrical and mechanical needs.  My personal choice is to have the fridge in the car as its a better ride but others may have some other ideas.

Welcome to Myswag.

Use your camper a few times, and the important mods will become evident, as what's essential for one person, isn't important for another.

Welcome to the Forum, read all the threads on the forum first, ask some questions, spend a few nights under the canvas and take notes. Then you can upgrade the tow buggy and start on the long list of mods, good luck

Hi Morgan

Welcome to My Swag and the Forum.  We have a 2010 Complete Campsite Kakadu XT16, and there are a few Complete Campsite owners here so if you need answers please ask and we will try to assist.

As Gunna Do and GGPatrol have said, use it a few times and get a feel of it, then look at doing/getting mods for it

HI Morgansmall.

Welcome to the forum, from another Canberra-ite. Where are you located?

You'll find that if you can't get answers on here, they probably don't exist.  :D

G'day & Welcome.

I'll go out on a limb and say put the fridge in the camper, and get another for the 4wby. Once you've set up you'll want your fridge close by the kitchen.

But if you go for a drive you might want to take some food and cold drinks. If you can manage two fridges you'll be very happy.

On the 4wby, is there anywhere you've wanted to go that you couldn't because of your vehicle? Do you want to get more adventurous? If it's serving your needs then keep it. Anything bigger is just going to cost you more.

Welcome Morgan, from an ex-Canberraite.

Nice choice of trailer. You'll find it gets a bit harder to tow once you put all your gear in it too - clearly you need a Prado as stated earlier! ;D

Enjoy your new toy, and we'll see you out there sometime.

Cheers,

Cam

Welcome Morgan,

We are at North Cooma and McAbouts are nearby also.

2 Fridges are handy we have a 40 litre Weaco in trailer and a 47litre in the LC...   For those longer trips one can be the freezer.

Hi Morgan and welcome. I'm another from North Cooma, also known as the Tuggers area. Like Kiwi Pete I have two fridges, 60ltr in the track and 40 in the CT. I also have a 32 but that's for game meat.

By chance I happen to know someone who knows their way around electricery, I did it on aircraft for 20+ yrs so if you need a hand just PM me.

With so many MySwagers in and around the ACT region we should organise a weekend down Blue Water Holes, 3 Mile Dam or Bullocks Hill Fire Trail (all in the Kozi NP).

Welcome Morgan

The choice of tow vehicle will soon become evident.  There is always something else you want to see just as there is always a way to see it within your budget.  Lots of ideas on this site and much expertise.  The choice of tow vehicle is just as personal as the choice of camper - that's why I reckon you cant beat a Pajero (once you make a statement like this you need to wear a flame suit).

Best of luck with your camper, hope to see you out there sometime, only two weeks 'til I get mine

I would like to get to blue water holes myself but I am getting a little pressed for time, I am heading off in 6 weeks for a 12 week stint across the continent.  But I am considering a test run somewhere close to Canberra, within an hour or so drive with all the gear on the weekend of 11, 12, 13 Feb to try everything out and make sure I am ready.  Was thinking of WeeJasper or maybe Blue Water Holes.

Wil,
BWH is about 2.5 hrs. 12/13 Feb works for me ATM.

Meet at Michalago Servo at 0900 (just off Monaro Highway)
Set up and lunch BWH 1200
Pack up an leave 1300 Sunday. Those 4WD capable could go home via Broken Cart Track, Boundry road and on to Brindabella road. Remainer take return via Adamidiby and Cooma (same way as get there.)

How's that sound?

Hi all,

We could be interested in this trip. Sounds good and we haven't heard of the area before. Currently trying to look for a map with the roads on there to get an idea. Anyone have any photos of Blue Water Holes? We'd love to see them. Let us know if the trip is happening and we will see how my shifts are going and the sport committment.

Cheers
Louise :D

Well I've just had one of my questions answered.

We'd put our Santa Fe on the market a couple of weeks ago at a price we would be prepared to sell it at, thinking either it sells for the price we want or it doeesn't, in which case we'd be happy to keep it - mind made up!

Anyway a guy just came to pick it up tonight after seeing it yesterday and offering the price we wanted.  So now we have no tow vehicle but we're looking forward to our next purchase very soon I hope.  It will be a 4by and at my height (6ft 7) we're settled on a Navara, clutch problems/ute off-road handling and all..

Car shopping at the weekend - love it!

Hi Morgansmall.

What Navara will you be looking for? Diesel? Auto/manual??

I'm thinking of putting my D40 turbo diesel auto on the market. It has a rear canopy, bullbar, spotties, 2" OME lift, under body guards, BFG KM2 muddies, electric brake controller..... You're welcome to have a look/drive if you want. Send me a PM to arrange. :)
