Title: Hi There Campers
Post by: Boesman on January 09, 2011, 03:40:04 PM
Also just found your forum this morning.

Swambo and I have been debating profusely over how to approach 'getting into camping' in Australia.

So here goes......

We are from South Africa and arrived on your shores late last year. Since then we have been looking on Gumtree to see what is available in the lines of trailers/caravans/tents/rooftop tents/bush trailers etc etc. We have a very restrictive budget at this time so making up ones mind takes a bit longer I guess.

In SA we did a lot of tent camping before we had a child. Then we packed the tents away and bought a small caravan and later upgraded to a bigger one.
Now that we are here and seeing that the possibilities with regards to camping ,especially offroad camping, are much better, we are exited to go camping again.

It seems we will be looking at buying a rig similar to the 'Jayco Flight'. Just much older in order to fit into our budget. Luckily we still have all our camping gear.

So yes, thats us.........

Hoping to discover new things and ask many questions in the months to come.

Regards

Welcome to myswag! My boss is 'seth efrikan' so I won't hold that against you ;D His camping trip photos are awesome, quick trips to Botswana and Tanzania, lions, tigers, elephants. Sounds like you have a good handle on what you need, hopefully something pops up. Remember it’s not what you tow out there, it’s being out there that counts.

Welcome Boesman and yes, there are plenty of girls here on the forum.
Camping in South Africa???    Sounds pretty scarey to me with all those big cats and hippos and wild dogs and hyenas etc etc etc.!!!!!     And some people think camping in Oz can be dangerous - piece of cake I reckon - though I guess up here in the top end we do have the crocs to contend with.
Anyway, enjoy your time on the site and good luck with your ct buying.
Cheers
Sharyn

Sorry for resurecting a fossilised thread.....

Thought I would just update on progress.

Well, we went from coming to Oz with a 3 man tent, to eventually purchasing our first camper trailer (a PMX china import)

We then tried doing the caravanning thing again but after two years decided we would rather go back to a camper trailer as the caravan cant go the places the trailers can.

We were very happy with our previous PMX camper trailer and decided that we would try and find the same one again but just with upgraded independent suspension this time. Looked for a while on Gumtree and finally found a good one for a good price. Did the electrics and added a hot water shower. Went camping and she's a bute.
